This lesson is the final session in the Exploring Our World unit for Year 1 students. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their learning about geography, express their favourite places, and share interesting discoveries.

Lesson Details

  • Year Level: Year 1
  • Lesson Duration: 40 minutes
  • Class Size: 20 students
  • Unit: Exploring Our World
  • Lesson Number: 15 of 15
  • Focus Skill: Reflection and oral communication

Learning Intentions

By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Reflect on what they have learned about places and geography
✅ Identify and describe their favourite places in the world
✅ Share what they found most interesting in a creative way

Success Criteria

Students will demonstrate success by:
⭐ Verbally describing a place they like and why it is special
⭐ Drawing or mapping a place they have learned about
⭐ Actively listening and responding to peers

Resources Needed

  • A3 sheets of paper
  • Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers
  • A soft ball for discussion activity
  • Globe or large world map
  • Photos of well-known Australian landmarks (Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, Sydney Opera House, etc.)

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up Discussion (5 mins)

🌏 Hook Question: "If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go and why?"
🎤 Teacher invites students to share quick responses (think-pair-share) while pointing to locations on a world map or a globe.

2. Review of Unit Learnings (10 mins)

📌 Quick Recap: Teacher holds up images of locations explored in the unit (e.g., rainforests, deserts, oceans) and asks students to recall key facts about them.

Example Guided Questions:

  • "What are some things we’ve learned about places around the world?"
  • "What is something special about Australia’s landscapes that you remember?"
  • "What would it be like to live in a place different from ours?"

(Teacher writes student responses on the board as a brainstorm).

3. My Favourite Place Activity (15 mins)

🖍 Task: Students draw a picture of their favourite place – real or imaginary – and include key features (trees, buildings, rivers, animals, etc.)
Label & Describe: They write or dictate a short sentence about why they love this place.

Teacher moves around, engaging with students about their choices.

4. Pass the Ball Sharing (5 mins)

🗣 Oral Sharing: Students sit in a circle. A soft ball is passed around; whoever holds it shares one thing they found interesting in the unit.

Encourage responses like:
🎙 "I loved learning about the Great Barrier Reef because..."
🎙 "I want to visit the desert because..."

5. Closing Reflection (5 mins)

💬 Final Thought: "Imagine you're telling a friend who wasn’t in our class—what's the coolest thing you’ve learned about our world?"
🌟 Students each share one takeaway with a partner.

Teacher concludes by celebrating what they’ve learned and reminding them that exploring our world never stops!

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment

✔ Informal observation during discussions
✔ Student participation in sharing activity
✔ Completion of "My Favourite Place" drawing and description

Differentiation

🔹 For advanced learners: Encourage them to add a mini story or extra labels to their drawing.
🔹 For students needing support: Provide sentence starters (e.g., "I like this place because...").

Reflection for Educators

🔍 How well did students recall and articulate their learnings?
🔍 Did the sharing activity encourage deeper thinking?
🔍 What changes could enhance student engagement for future reflection lessons?

Extension Ideas

🌍 Create a class "Favourite Places" book with all student drawings.
🗺️ Introduce the concept of travel – map how to get to different places.
🎭 Act out different environments (e.g., moving like the ocean, trees swaying in the wind).

💡 Final Thought:
This lesson is not just about recalling facts—it’s about fostering curiosity. Keep students wondering about the world and asking, "What's out there to discover next?" 🚀
