Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 minutes – Hook and prior knowledge Open with the hook and learning intention slides. Explain that today’s conclusion must be based on evidence, not simply whether the Pokémon is a favourite.

  2. 7–15 minutes – Model a scientist’s question Revisit the question-modelling slides. Compare a broad question, such as “Is Pikachu real?”, with a focused, testable question such as “Could Pikachu find enough food and shelter in a New Zealand forest?” Identify the habitat, needs and conditions included in the stronger question. Together, choose one Pokémon and create or refine the learner’s own question.

  3. 15–25 minutes – Evaluate information sources Use the trustworthy-source slides to introduce a simple check: Who created it? What evidence or references does it use? Why was it made? When was it updated? Is the information supported elsewhere? Model comparing a library book with a safe, teacher-approved website. Briefly distinguish evidence, which can be checked, from opinion, which expresses a belief or judgement. Hold the formative source-evaluation conference: ask the learner to explain which source they would trust and why.

  4. 25–42 minutes – Guided research Distribute the Pokémon evidence research organiser. The learner researches the chosen Pokémon and its possible ecosystem using a library book and a safe website, with adult support as needed. Record the source title, author or organisation, date if available, useful facts and whether each fact is evidence or opinion. Encourage research into food, water, shelter, temperature, predators and adaptations. Pause midway to check that each fact answers the focused question.

  5. 42–54 minutes – Claim, evidence and reasoning Use the claim-evidence-reasoning modelling slides. Model a short example: “Pikachu may not survive in a cold alpine habitat” is the claim; facts about temperature and available food are the evidence; explaining how those conditions affect survival is the reasoning. The learner writes one paragraph on the worksheet, using at least two pieces of evidence from different trustworthy sources. Support accurate scientific vocabulary without requiring a long report.

  6. 54–60 minutes – Present and reflect Use the discussion and plenary slides. The learner reads the paragraph aloud and explains which source was most useful. Ask: “Which fact most strongly supports your claim?” and “What information would you still like to investigate?” Finish by revisiting the success criteria and identifying one improvement for the next research lesson.
