Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Recall and hook. Teacher opens the question and recap slides and asks, “How could you prove that a structure helps an organism?” Students briefly discuss examples from the unit, such as a ribcage, a tree trunk or bending an elbow.

  2. 4–7 min · Explain the challenge. Teacher places students in five groups of five, displays the three categories—animal skeletons, plant support systems and human movement—and models one example: “A ribcage supports the body and protects important organs.” Students listen, ask clarifying questions and decide which group role they would like: reader, sorter, recorder, evidence finder or presenter.

  3. 7–17 min · Group classification and explanation. Teacher gives each group a mixed set of teacher-prepared picture or word cards and the support and movement evidence organiser. Students classify each example, record the structure involved, identify whether it provides support, protection or movement, and write or draw evidence. Include examples such as a bird wing and bones, a dog’s skeleton, a tree trunk, a grass stem, a person bending an arm and a person walking. Teacher circulates, asking, “What is the structure?” and “What evidence shows what it does?”

  4. 17–25 min · Group presentations. Teacher uses the presentation prompt slides to keep presentations focused and invites each group to share two examples. Students present using the sentence frame: “We classified ___ as ___. The structure is ___. It helps by ___. Our evidence is ___.” Classmates listen for one accurate use of support, protection or movement and show a quiet thumbs-up when they hear evidence.

  5. 25–28 min · Check and correct. Teacher revisits any misconceptions, particularly that muscles pull on bones to create movement and that plants have support structures even though they do not move from place to place. Students revise one statement on their organiser if needed and explain their correction to a partner.

  6. 28–30 min · Exit reflection. Teacher asks students to complete the final prompt on the support and movement evidence organiser: “Choose one structure and explain how it helps a living thing.” Students hand in their organisers as they leave.
