Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and prior knowledge

Show two contrasting smoothie ideas and ask: “Which one would you choose, and what makes it a good choice?” Students make a quick individual choice, then share one reason with a partner. Explain that today they will plan, rather than make, a three-ingredient smoothie.

  1. 5–12 minutes – Ingredient investigation

Use the ingredient investigation slides to introduce three useful lenses: flavour, texture and nutritional contribution. Discuss examples such as fruit for sweetness and flavour, yoghurt or milk for creaminess and protein, and leafy greens or oats for fibre and nutrients. Clarify that “healthy” choices depend on the user, portion, ingredients and dietary needs; avoid labelling foods as simply good or bad.

In pairs, students examine the ingredient examples on the worksheet and annotate or discuss: What might this add? What might it taste or feel like? What could it be paired with?

  1. 12–18 minutes – Teacher modelling

Display the modelling and decision-making slides and model planning a smoothie, for example banana, plain yoghurt and berries. Think aloud: “Banana adds sweetness and thickness, yoghurt adds creaminess and protein, and berries add colour and a sharp flavour.” Model checking the combination for allergies, dietary requirements, seasonality, packaging and food waste.

Emphasise that a successful plan must be realistic, safe and suitable for an identified user.

  1. 18–33 minutes – Individual recipe planning

Distribute the three-ingredient smoothie planning worksheet. Students choose a user or purpose, such as a breakfast smoothie, a post-sport option or a low-waste family snack. They select exactly three main ingredients and complete the plan, including:

  1. 33–40 minutes – Peer review

Partners check: exactly three ingredients, a clear intended user, a plausible flavour combination, nutritional balance, and a safety consideration.

Students make one improvement to their own plan and underline the change.

  1. 40–45 minutes – Plenary and formative check

Return to the plenary slides. Invite three students to share one design decision and its reason. Ask the class: “What makes a smoothie plan more than a list of ingredients?” Students complete the final reflection on the worksheet: “My strongest design decision is… because…” Collect worksheets for assessment and remind students that the next lesson will refine plans before practical preparation.
