Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 1 of 1 in the unit "Phonics Teaching Sequence for Year 3-4". Lesson Title: Comprehensive Phonics Review and Assessment - Year 3-4 Lesson Description: A condensed phonics lesson covering short/long vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, and basic multisyllable patterns. Students engage in differentiated activities including pattern recognition, decodable reading, spelling practice, and strategy application. Year 3 learners focus on foundational pattern mastery while Year 4 students work on complex applications and teaching others.

Overview

In this 45-minute review lesson, students revisit common spelling patterns through rapid recognition, decodable reading, spelling and strategy application. Year 3 students consolidate foundational patterns; Year 4 students apply more complex patterns and explain strategies to peers.

Learning intentions

  • WALT recognise and use common sound–letter patterns in words.
  • WALT read and spell words with increasing accuracy.
  • WALT use chunking and known patterns to decode unfamiliar words.
  • WALT explain how a spelling pattern helps us read or spell a word.

Success criteria

  • I can identify short and long vowels, blends and digraphs.
  • I can read words containing r-controlled vowels, vowel teams and syllable patterns.
  • I can use a word part or sound pattern to spell an unfamiliar word.
  • I can explain the strategy I used.

Curriculum links

  • Literacy: listening, reading and viewing—decode, read and discuss increasingly complex texts.
  • Literacy: writing—use sound–letter relationships, spelling patterns and word structure to spell accurately.
  • Literacy: oral language—explain ideas and respond to others during partner talk.
  • Key competencies: thinking; using language, symbols and texts; relating to others; managing self.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and sound warm-up

Open with the sound detective hook and warm-up slides. Display the question, “How can a tiny group of letters help us read a new word?” Say and blend a few familiar words, such as ship, train and storm. Students show thumbs up when they hear a target pattern and briefly share what they noticed.

  1. 5–13 minutes – Explicit review and modelling

Use the phonics pattern review slides to revisit:

  • short and long vowels: cat, cake
  • consonant blends: stop, frog
  • digraphs: ship, thin, chat
  • r-controlled vowels: car, fork, bird
  • vowel teams: rain, boat, seed
  • basic multisyllable patterns: sunset, rabbit, jumping

Model “spot, say, slide”: spot the pattern, say each sound, then slide the sounds together. Remind students that some patterns can represent more than one sound and that the surrounding word helps us check.

  1. 13–22 minutes – Differentiated pattern sort

In pairs, students complete the pattern-recognition section of the differentiated phonics review worksheet. They underline the target pattern and sort or label each word. Year 3 students work mainly with short and long vowels, blends and digraphs. Year 4 students also identify r-controlled vowels, vowel teams and syllable divisions.

Pause halfway for students to compare one answer with another pair. Address misconceptions by modelling one word on the board rather than marking every answer publicly.

  1. 22–30 minutes – Decodable reading and partner coaching

Display the short decodable word lists and sentences in the guided reading and coaching slides. Partners read aloud, alternating one word or sentence at a time. If a reader is unsure, the partner prompts: “Look for a known pattern; say the sounds; blend; check that it makes sense.”

Year 3 students read the simpler list and sentences. Year 4 students read the more complex words and then coach a Year 3 partner, giving a prompt rather than the answer. Select two or three words for whole-class discussion.

  1. 30–38 minutes – Spelling and strategy application

Students complete the spelling section of the differentiated phonics review worksheet. Dictate six words, allowing thinking time: crash, float, turn, sheep, rabbit, and sunlight. Say each word in a sentence, repeat it, and ask students to underline the pattern or divide the syllables.

Year 3 students spell the first four words and may use the pattern bank. Year 4 students attempt all six and add one sentence containing a multisyllable word. After each word, briefly reveal the spelling and ask students to correct it neatly, identifying the part that helped or caused difficulty.

  1. 38–43 minutes – Quick individual check

Use the individual assessment and reflection slides. Students independently read four words and spell two dictated words on the final section of the differentiated phonics review worksheet. Suggested words are bright, corner, train, and chewing for reading, followed by storm and sunset for spelling.

Collect or quickly scan this section as an individual snapshot. Students who finish early write one new word containing a vowel team and explain its pattern.

  1. 43–45 minutes – Plenary

Ask students to complete the sentence orally: “When I meet a word I do not know, I can…” Invite two students to model the strategy. Revisit the hook question using the final reflection slide and celebrate careful thinking, not just correct answers.

Resources

  • the complete phonics review slide deck
  • the differentiated phonics review worksheet
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Pencils and coloured pencils
  • Teacher word cards or prepared word list
  • Reading partners arranged before the lesson
  • Optional highlighters for marking spelling patterns

Assessment

  • Observe partner reading and note whether students identify, blend and check sound patterns.
  • Review the worksheet’s sorting, spelling and individual check sections to identify patterns needing reteaching.
  • Record students who can explain a decoding strategy, not only those who give a correct answer.

Differentiation

  • Support: provide a reduced word list, enlarged print, coloured vowel/pattern cues and oral rehearsal before writing. Allow students to point, say and blend before recording.
  • EAL learners: pre-teach unfamiliar vocabulary, use the sentence context, model mouth movements and pair with a supportive peer.
  • SEN/dyslexia support: use a clear sans-serif font, generous spacing, non-timed practice, sound buttons or finger tracking, and accept oral responses where appropriate.
  • Extension: Year 4 students classify words by pattern, explain exceptions or create a new word and sentence for each complex pattern.
