Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 1 of 1 in the unit "Stage Presence and Projection". Lesson Title: Introduction to Stage Techniques Lesson Description: In this lesson, students will explore basic acting techniques focusing on physical positioning on stage, effective voice projection, and the importance of stage presence. Students will engage in warm-up exercises and group activities that emphasize movement and vocal expression.

Overview

In this first lesson of the unit, students practise simple stage skills: how to stand and move clearly, how to project their voice, and how to build stage presence through respectful, confident performance. They will work in groups to practise short acting moments and give friendly feedback.

Learning intentions

WALT (We Are Learning To)

  • WALT use safe, clear body positioning to be seen on stage
  • WALT practise voice projection so our words can be heard by an audience
  • WALT show stage presence by using purposeful movement and respectful focus
  • WALT work with others to create and practise a short group performance

Success criteria

  • I can stand in a clear position (facing the audience, balanced, and still when needed)
  • I can speak loudly and clearly enough for everyone in the room to hear
  • I can use at least two stage presence behaviours (eye focus, purposeful gesture, confident posture)
  • I can give and receive feedback respectfully and try improvements

Curriculum links

  • Drama: exploring movement, expression, and voice in performance
  • The arts: developing skills and ideas through practice, rehearsal, and sharing
  • Key competencies: managing self, relating to others, and participating and contributing
  • Communication: using oral language effectively to convey meaning to others

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 5 mins – Welcome & warm-up focus Students sit in a circle. Teacher reminds class of resilience, relationships, and respect. Explain today’s goal: “Be seen, be heard, and be confident.”

  2. 8 mins – Physical warm-up: “Stage Space” In open floor space, students practise: tall stance (feet apart for balance), slow walks in “clean lines,” and freezing on a silent cue. Teacher checks for safety (no pushing, awareness of space) and models a clear freeze facing an imaginary audience.

  3. 8 mins – Voice projection games: “Can You Hear Me?” Students practise speaking at three levels: whisper to self, speaking to a friend, and projection to the back of the room. Use call-and-response: teacher says a short line; students repeat with increasing volume and clear endings. Emphasise breath support (big breath in, steady voice out).

  4. 6 mins – Stage presence mini-drill: “Audience Eye” Students practise looking at an audience target (teacher marks 3 “audience spots” around the room). On a cue, they hold eye focus for 3 seconds, with a purposeful gesture that matches a simple action (e.g., “I notice something,” “I feel worried,” “I’m excited”). Quick resets between tries.

  5. 12 mins – Group task: “Picture + Voice” Put students into groups of 4–5. Each group creates a 20–30 second moment using a prompt card:

  • “A character enters and realises something important”
  • “A character is waiting for news”
  • “A character is searching and calling out” Students must include: one clear starting position, one movement change, and one projected line. Teacher circulates, using a simple prompt: “Where will the audience be? Can we hear you? Are we using purposeful stillness?”
  1. 4 mins – Share & quick feedback Two groups perform. After each, classmates use a “Glow and Grow” sentence:
  • Glow: one thing that was clear (body, voice, or presence)
  • Grow: one suggestion to improve the next try Teacher validates effort and links feedback to the success criteria.
  1. 2 mins – Reflect & collect next step Students write or say one sentence reflection: “Today I learned…” and “Next time I will…” Teacher previews Lesson 2: building from these basics into a short piece with stronger confidence and timing.

Resources

  • Marking tape or cones to define a “stage area”
  • Prompt cards for group moments (3 themes provided above)
  • Optional short script sentence cards (1–2 lines) for students who need wording support
  • Simple timer
  • Voice projection cues (e.g., “Project to Spot 3”)
  • Student feedback sentence stems on the board
  • Visual cue signs: “Stand,” “Face,” “Still,” “Breathe,” “Project”
  • Dyslexia-friendly printed prompt sheets (large font, minimal text)

Assessment

  • Teacher observation during warm-ups and group work: clear positioning, projected voice, and respectful audience focus
  • Formative feedback during the “Glow and Grow” sharing moment
  • Exit reflection sentence to check understanding and next steps (body, voice, or presence)

Differentiation

  • Support for students who need structure: provide a pre-chosen line, a movement plan (enter → freeze → gesture → speak), and a clearly marked starting spot
  • Support for students with speech or confidence concerns: allow whisper-to-projection practice in pairs first, then join the group when ready
  • Extension for confident performers: add an extra moment (change level: crouch/stand, or add a second projected line) while keeping clarity
  • EAL/SEN strategies: model key actions slowly, use visual cues, provide prompt cards with simple images, and allow rehearsal time before performing
  • Dyslexia-friendly reading options:
  • Offer large-font prompt cards with short phrases only
  • Read prompts aloud and allow students to point to their chosen option
  • Provide audio recording/teacher read-aloud of group lines during planning time
