🔧 Materials

  • Printed story excerpts (1 story per group, e.g. from Māori, Japanese, Samoan, Indian and Egyptian traditional tales)
  • A3 sheets or whiteboards for group brainstorming
  • Markers
  • Cultural prompt cards (for guiding analysis: e.g. “What is the message?”, “What cultural values are shown?”, “What do we learn about the people in this story?”)
  • Timer or classroom clock

🕒 Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction & Context – 5 minutes

  • Teacher Talking Point:
“Last time we explored how culture can shape stories. Today, we’re going to read stories from different parts of the world. As we do, think like detectives — what do these stories tell us about the people, their values, and their beliefs?”

  • Review: Quick class brainstorm: “What makes a story cultural?”

    • Prompt students: values, symbols, traditions, heroes/villains
    • Write 3–4 key points on the board

2. Group Activity – 15 minutes

Class is split into 6 groups of 5 students each

  • Each group receives:

    • One short story excerpt (adapted for Year 6 comprehension)
    • A set of Cultural Prompt Cards
    • A3 paper & markers
  • Group Task Instructions:

    1. Read the story together (assign a reader or read in turns)
    2. Use prompt cards to guide discussion
    3. Write or draw 3 things they learned about the story’s culture
    4. Choose 2 group members to share findings in the next segment
  • Teacher circulates, supports pronunciation, prompts deeper thinking (“Why do you think the main character acts that way?” “What does this tradition remind you of?”)

3. Group Presentations – 7 minutes

  • Each group presents for around 1 minute
  • Encourage use of key phrases like: “In [culture] they value…”, “This character reminds us of… because…”, “The story teaches that…”
  • Teacher models respectful listening and encourages class to ask one follow-up question per group

4. Wrap-Up Reflection – 3 minutes

  • Whole-class kōrero (discussion):

    • “What surprised you about the stories?”
    • “Can we find values in these stories that we also have in Aotearoa New Zealand?”
    • “Why is it important to learn about other cultures through their stories?”
  • Optional “Exit Slips”: Ask students to write one new thing they learned about a culture on a post-it as they leave

🌱 Differentiation

  • Support for ESOL learners: Group them where supported peer reading and visuals scaffold understanding
  • Advanced learners: Challenge students to identify universal themes among stories (e.g. respect for elders, community, justice)
  • Cultural Inclusion: Include at least one Pasifika and one indigenous story; invite students to bring a story from home in a future lesson

📌 Assessment (Formative)

  • Observation during group work: Engagement, collaboration, use of cultural vocabulary
  • Listening to presentations: Depth of reflection and understanding
  • Student responses in final reflection

🔄 Next Steps

In Lesson 3 (final of the unit), students will create their own mini cultural story, drawing inspiration from what they’ve learned—respecting both their own identity and weaving in global understanding.
