Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  2. 4–9 min · Direct teach. Use the vertebrate and invertebrate teaching slides to introduce vertebrate and invertebrate.   5. 23–27 min · Individual application. Students complete the final section of the animal classification recording sheet independently: classify three new animal images and write one explanation. Circulate and ask individuals to identify the evidence behind each answer rather than relying on memorised labels.

  6. 27–30 min · Plenary and exit check. Show the final challenge and exit prompt. Students answer orally or on the worksheet: “Is a slug a vertebrate or an invertebrate? Explain why.” Select two contrasting responses to discuss, then collect worksheets to identify next steps for lesson 8.
