Adding and Subtracting With Bar Models
Year 5 Mathematics Using visual models to solve problems New Zealand Curriculum Level 3

What Are Bar Models?
Visual tools that help us see math problems Show the parts and whole of a problem Make addition and subtraction easier to understand Help us organize our thinking

Let's Build a Bar Model Together!
Problem: 24 + 37 Draw one long bar Split it into two parts Label each part with our numbers
Addition with Bar Models
Start with two parts (addends) Draw them as sections in one bar The whole bar shows the sum Example: 24 + 37 = 61

Subtraction with Bar Models
Start with the whole (total) Show one part that we know Find the missing part Example: 61 - 24 = 37

Bar Models vs Vertical Method
{"left":"Bar models help us SEE the problem\nShows parts and wholes clearly","right":"Vertical method helps us CALCULATE\nOrganized way to work with numbers"}

Your Turn to Try!
Problem: 45 + 28 First: Draw your bar model Then: Solve using vertical method Check: Does your answer make sense?

Remember
Bar models help us understand the problem Vertical methods help us calculate accurately Together, they make us stronger mathematicians!
