Finding Missing Numbers & Patterns
Year 2 Mathematics Learning to solve number problems Discovering patterns around us
WALT: We Are Learning To...
Find missing numbers in addition problems Find missing numbers in subtraction problems Use counting strategies to solve problems Identify and continue simple patterns
What's Missing?
Look at this problem: 4 + _ = 7 What number is hiding behind the box? How can we find out?
Strategy 1: Cover the Box
Put your finger over the missing number Say the problem out loud Think: What number makes this true? 4 + _ = 7 becomes '4 plus what equals 7?'
Let's Try It Together!
Problem: 4 + _ = 7 Cover the box with your finger Count on from 4: 5, 6, 7 The missing number is 3!

Using Tens Frames
Tens frames help us see numbers clearly Put 4 counters in the frame Add more until you reach 7 Count how many you added!

More Missing Numbers
Try: _ + 2 = 6 Try: 8 - _ = 5 Use counting on or counting back Check your answers!

Guided Practice Time
Problem 1: 3 + _ = 8 Problem 2: _ + 4 = 9 Problem 3: 10 - _ = 6 Work with your partner!
Differentiation Strategies
{"left":"For students who need more support: Use physical counters, Start with smaller numbers, Work in pairs with peer support","right":"For students ready for challenge: Try larger numbers, Create their own problems, Explain their thinking to others"}
Now Let's Explore Patterns!
Patterns are everywhere around us They repeat in a regular way Let's look at some simple patterns Can you continue them?
AAB Pattern
Red, Red, Blue, Red, Red, Blue What comes next? Apple, Apple, Banana, Apple, Apple, ? Can you clap this pattern?
ABC Pattern
Triangle, Circle, Square, Triangle, Circle, ? What shape comes next? Can you make this pattern with your body? Stand, Sit, Lie down, Stand, Sit, ?
