Year 11 Health & Physical Education Understanding the building blocks of physical fitness 30-minute presentation
What is Physical Fitness?
The ability to carry out daily activities with vigor Having enough energy for leisure pursuits Being able to meet physical demands without excessive fatigue A combination of health and performance capabilities
Two Main Categories of Fitness Components
{"left":"Health-Related Fitness Components\nEssential for overall health and well-being\nReduce risk of chronic diseases\nImprove quality of life","right":"Skill-Related Fitness Components\nEnhance athletic performance\nImprove sports-specific abilities\nDevelop movement efficiency"}
Health-Related Fitness Components
Cardiovascular Endurance Muscular Strength Muscular Endurance Flexibility Body Composition
Cardiovascular Endurance
Definition: The ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen during sustained physical activity Also called cardiorespiratory fitness or aerobic fitness Examples: Running, swimming, cycling, dancing Benefits: Stronger heart, lower resting heart rate, improved stamina
Quick Fitness Assessment
Partner up with someone near you Take your resting pulse for 15 seconds (multiply by 4) Do 20 jumping jacks together Immediately retake your pulse Discuss: How quickly does your heart rate return to normal?
Muscular Strength vs Muscular Endurance
Muscular Strength: Maximum force a muscle can produce in a single effort Example: Your one-rep max bench press Muscular Endurance: Ability to repeat muscle contractions over time Example: How many push-ups you can do consecutively Both are important for different activities and sports
Skill-Related Fitness Components
Agility: Ability to change direction quickly Balance: Maintaining equilibrium while stationary or moving Coordination: Using different body parts together smoothly Power: Combining strength and speed Reaction Time: Time taken to respond to a stimulus Speed: Moving quickly from one point to another
Think and Discuss
Which fitness components would be most important for: A marathon runner? A basketball player? A gymnast? Someone who works in an office all day?
Summary and Application
Health-related components benefit everyone's wellbeing Skill-related components enhance performance and daily movement Most activities require a combination of components Understanding these helps design effective training programs Regular assessment helps track improvement
