Float or Sink? Materials Exploration

Year 1 Science Investigation Exploring Our Material World

What Are We Investigating Today?
Slide 2

What Are We Investigating Today?

We will test different materials in water Some materials will float on top Other materials will sink to the bottom We'll record what we observe like real scientists!

Our Science Vocabulary
Slide 3

Our Science Vocabulary

Float - stays on top of the water Sink - goes down to the bottom Heavy - feels like it weighs a lot Light - doesn't weigh very much

Let's Make Predictions!
Slide 4

Let's Make Predictions!

Look at each material Think: Will it float or sink? Share your prediction with your group Remember - there are no wrong guesses!

Our Investigation Steps
Slide 5

Our Investigation Steps

Step 1: Pick up one material carefully Step 2: Make your prediction Step 3: Gently place it in the water Step 4: Watch what happens Step 5: Record on your sheet

What Do You Notice?
Slide 6

What Do You Notice?

Which materials float? Which materials sink? What makes some materials different from others?

Our Amazing Discoveries!
Slide 7

Our Amazing Discoveries!

Materials that usually FLOAT: Wood, cork, plastic caps, sponges Materials that usually SINK: Stones, metal, paper clips

Great job, scientists!

Great job, scientists!

Today we learned that different materials behave differently in water. Some float because they are light or have air inside them. Others sink because they are heavy. You used your eyes and brains just like real scientists!
