Fuelling Performance: An Introduction to Nutrients
Year 11 Physical Education Understanding the building blocks of nutrition
What Are Nutrients?
Essential substances our bodies need to function properly Provide energy, support growth, and maintain health Critical for athletic performance and recovery Help optimize training adaptations and prevent injury Must be obtained through food and supplements
The Big Three: Macronutrients
Carbohydrates - primary energy source for exercise Proteins - building blocks for muscle repair and growth Fats - energy storage and hormone production Required in large amounts (grams per day) Each serves unique functions in athletic performance
The Essential Helpers: Micronutrients
Vitamins - regulate body processes and support immunity Minerals - strengthen bones and support muscle function Required in smaller amounts (milligrams or micrograms) Critical for energy production and recovery Deficiencies can significantly impact performance
Balance is Key
All five nutrients work together as a team No single nutrient can optimize performance alone Balanced intake supports training, competition, and recovery Individual needs vary based on sport, training phase, and goals
Your Mission: Nutrient Experts
Form groups of 3-4 students Each group assigned one nutrient to research Create a poster or slideshow presentation covering: • What is your nutrient? • Which foods contain it? • Why is it important for health and performance? • How much do athletes need? Present findings to the class next lesson
