WALT (We Are Learning To)
Understand fractions: halves (½), thirds (⅓), quarters (¼) Show fractions using equal parts Compare simple fractions Use fraction words correctly
Success Criteria
I can match fraction words to symbols I can divide shapes into equal parts I can show that 2/4 = 1/2 I can compare two fractions I can use fraction vocabulary correctly
Activity 1: Paper Strip Fractions
Fold paper strips to make: Halves (½) - fold once Thirds (⅓) - fold twice Quarters (¼) - fold three times Match fraction words to symbols
Activity 2: Sharing Sets Equally
Use counters or fruit cut-outs Share 6 objects into halves (3 each) Share 6 objects into thirds (2 each) Share 8 objects into quarters (2 each) Write the fractions for each group
Fraction Equivalence: 2/4 = 1/2
Use fraction walls to compare 2 quarters = 1 half They take up the same space! Visual proof helps us understand
Which Fraction is Bigger?
Look at these fractions: 1/3 or 1/4? Use your fraction strips to compare Explain your thinking to a partner
