Magnet Magic: Year 5 Science Experiments
Exploring the invisible force of magnetism Hands-on experiments and discoveries Year 5 Science Adventure
WALT (We Are Learning To)
Understand what magnetism is and how it works Identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials Conduct safe science experiments with magnets Observe and record scientific findings Explain magnetic attraction and repulsion
Success Criteria - How We'll Know We've Succeeded
I can explain what magnetism is in my own words I can predict which materials will be attracted to magnets I can follow safety rules during all experiments I can record my observations clearly I can work cooperatively in my team
Safety First - Our Magnet Rules
Never put magnets near electronic devices Keep magnets away from credit cards and computers Don't swallow small magnetic objects Handle magnets gently - they can pinch fingers Wear safety goggles during experiments Work carefully and listen to instructions
Experiment 1: Magnetic or Not?
Test 10 different materials with your magnet Record results in your science journal Materials: paper clip, plastic spoon, coin, rubber, wood, aluminum foil, steel nail, glass marble, fabric, copper wire Predict first, then test!
Experiment 2: Magnetic Field Detective
Place iron filings around a bar magnet Gently tap the paper to see the pattern Draw what you observe Try with different magnet shapes What do the patterns tell us?
Experiment 3: Magnet Strength Challenge
Test how many paper clips each magnet can hold Try different magnet sizes and shapes Measure the distance magnets can attract objects Record your findings in a table Which magnet is strongest?
Experiment 4: Poles Apart
Use two bar magnets to explore attraction and repulsion Try bringing same poles together Try bringing opposite poles together Feel the invisible force! Mark N (North) and S (South) poles
Experiment 5: Magic Through Materials
Can magnetism work through other materials? Test: paper, plastic, glass, wood, cloth Hold magnet on one side, metal object on other Does thickness matter? What about water?
Reflection Time - What Did We Discover?
What surprised you most about magnets today? Which materials were magnetic? Which weren't? How do you think we use magnets in everyday life? What questions do you still have about magnetism?
