What is a Butterfly?
Butterflies are insects They have six legs They have two wings on each side They can fly and are very colorful

Stage 1: The Tiny Egg
The butterfly starts as a very small egg The egg is round and tiny It sticks to a leaf The egg is smaller than your fingernail

Stage 2: The Hungry Caterpillar
The egg hatches into a caterpillar Caterpillars love to eat leaves They eat and eat and grow bigger They shed their skin as they grow

Stage 3: The Amazing Chrysalis
The caterpillar makes a hard shell called a chrysalis Inside the chrysalis, amazing changes happen The caterpillar turns into a butterfly This takes about two weeks

Stage 4: The Beautiful Butterfly
The butterfly breaks out of the chrysalis Its wings are soft and wet at first The wings dry and become strong Now it can fly and find flowers
