📖 Reading Passage: The Amazing Kiwi

The kiwi is New Zealand's most famous native bird and our national symbol. These unique, flightless birds are found nowhere else in the world. There are five different species of kiwi, and sadly, all are considered threatened or endangered.

Kiwi are quite unusual birds. They are about the size of a domestic chicken, weighing between 1.3 to 3.3 kilograms depending on the species. Unlike most birds, kiwi have hair-like feathers that feel more like fur. They have very small wings hidden under their feathers, which is why they cannot fly. Their legs are extremely strong, making them excellent runners who can reach speeds of up to 20 kilometres per hour.

One of the most remarkable features of the kiwi is their sense of smell. They are the only birds in the world with nostrils at the end of their long beaks. This helps them hunt for food at night, as kiwi are nocturnal creatures. They use their beaks to probe the ground for insects, worms, and grubs. A kiwi's beak is so sensitive it can detect vibrations in the soil.

Kiwi have an interesting family life. The female lays one or two enormous eggs - each egg can weigh up to 450 grams, which is about 20% of the mother's body weight! After laying the egg, it's the male kiwi who sits on it for about 80 days until it hatches. The chick is born with feathers and can look after itself quite quickly.

Unfortunately, kiwi face many threats. Introduced predators like stoats, cats, and dogs kill many kiwi, especially the young ones. Habitat loss due to farming and urban development has also reduced their numbers. Conservation groups across New Zealand are working hard to protect kiwi through breeding programmes and predator control.
