Learning Objective

Lesson Structure (20 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up: Magical Number Pair Hunt (5 Minutes)

Engage the pupils with movement and exploration.

• Write the numbers 1–19 on individual pieces of card and place them randomly around the room.
• Hand out number cards randomly to half the class (15 pupils).
• Explain: “We are going on a magical number hunt! If you are holding a number, you must find your partner—the number that makes 20 when added to yours!”
• Pupils move around and find their correct number bond partner.
• Once everyone has paired up correctly, ask some pairs to share their number bond aloud.

Example: “I have 8, and I found 12! 8 + 12 = 20!”

2. Teaching Input: Quick-Fire Number Bond Challenge (5 Minutes)

• Display an interactive number bond rainbow on the board, showing number pairs that make 20.
• Use a rapid recall approach:
  • Say a number out loud (e.g., 14), and pupils shout out the number needed to make 20 (e.g., “6!”).
  • Use a visual aid such as coloured counters to demonstrate on the board.
  • Encourage participation by making it a game—if every pupil answers correctly at least once, they earn a special class point!

3. Activity: Build a Lego Number Bond Bridge (7 Minutes)

A hands-on approach to reinforce learning.

• Each group of 5 pupils gets a set of 20 Lego bricks.
• Their challenge:
  • Find different ways to split the 20 bricks into two groups.
  • Record their number bond on a mini whiteboard (e.g., 7 + 13 = 20).
  • Share one example with the class.
• Encourage pupils to try and find at least three different splits.
• Use questioning: “What pattern do you notice?” “What happens if one number gets bigger?”

4. Plenary: Number Bond Song (3 Minutes)

• To reinforce recall, sing a simple number bonds to 20 song together (to the tune of a familiar nursery rhyme).
• Example:
  “10 and 10, oh what fun!
  9 and 11, we’re nearly done!
  8 and 12 fit right in,
  Number bonds make my brain win!”
• End with a quickfire round where pupils shout out number bonds in turn to complete a full set from 1 to 19.
