By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Dribble a football using simple, controlled touches.
- Pass a football accurately to a partner using the inside of their foot.
- Attempt simple shooting towards a target (goal).
- Work cooperatively in a small-sided game setting.
Resources & Equipment

- Cones (for dribbling drills and goal zones)
- Coloured bibs (for team identification)
- Portable goalposts or markers to create goal areas
- Whistle for teacher guidance
Lesson Breakdown (30 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up Game – Traffic Lights (5 minutes)
Objective: Enhance agility, spatial awareness, and ball control.
Instructions:
- Each student has a football.
- Spread out in a large designated space.
- The teacher calls out:
- "Green Light" – Students dribble the ball slowly.
- "Yellow Light" – Students dribble in slow-motion.
- "Red Light" – Students stop and freeze with their ball.
- Introduce "Speed Boost", where students try short, controlled bursts.
Progression:
- Add new instructions (e.g., "Reverse" where they change direction).
- Make it competitive – last student to stop correctly does a fun action (e.g., star jump).
2. Skill Practice – Dribbling Challenge (7 minutes)
Objective: Develop ball control and coordination.
Instructions:
- Set up cone pathways (one per small group of 5).
- Each student dribbles the ball around the cones, using small touches.
- Emphasise keeping the ball close to their feet.
- Students take turns in rotation.
Progression:
- Time students to gently add speed.
- Use non-dominant foot for extra challenge.
3. Passing Pairs (5 minutes)
Objective: Improve accuracy and control when passing to a teammate.
Instructions:
- Students split into pairs, standing 3-4 steps apart.
- They pass the ball using the inside of their foot.
- Focus on keeping the ball on the floor and accurate towards their partner.
- Gradually increase the passing distance.
Progression:
- One partner moves 1 step back with each successful pass.
- Introduce controlled "Stop & Pass" where students stop the ball before passing.
4. Shooting into Mini Goals (5 minutes)
Objective: Develop aiming skills and encourage confidence in shooting.
Instructions:
- Set up several small goals using cones or portable goals.
- Students take turns kicking towards the goal from a marked spot.
- Encourage them to aim rather than just kick hard.
- Provide encouragement for effort, even if they miss.
Progression:
- Introduce a "goalkeeper shadow" where a partner stands but doesn’t block fully.
- Challenge advanced players to use their weaker foot.
5. Mini Match – 3-A-Side Games (6 minutes)
Objective: Apply skills learned in a fun game format.
Instructions:
- Divide the class into six teams of five.
- Play short, rotational 3-a-side mini-games with small goals.
- Focus on teamwork, using dribbling, passing, and shooting.
- Each match lasts 2 minutes, then swap teams.
Progression:
- Encourage students to call out teammates' names before passing.
- Reward positive play, such as sharing the ball with teammates.
Cool Down – Slow Motion Replay (2 minutes)
Objective: Promote relaxation and reflection on skills learned.
Instructions:
- Walk slowly around with the football, pretending to replay the best moves they did.
- Stretch legs and arms gently while breathing deeply.
- Ask students to share one new skill they enjoyed.
Assessment & Differentiation
Assessment Opportunities:
✔ Observation of dribbling control and passing accuracy.
✔ Encouraging students to explain what they did well.
✔ Informal questioning: "What helped you keep the ball under control?"
Differentiation:
➡ Support for Less Confident Players: Provide a buddy system, assign a peer mentor to assist.
➡ Challenge for Advanced Learners: Make dribbling paths more complex, weaker foot focus.
Reflection & Home Link
Teacher Reflection:
✅ Which activities were most engaging?
✅ Did all students grasp basic dribbling, passing, and shooting?
Encouraging Home Practice:
- Challenge students to show a family member their new skill!
- Set a fun at-home challenge: "How many toe taps can you do in 10 seconds?"
Teacher’s Closing Note
This lesson aims to make football fun, ensuring Year 1 pupils feel confident with the ball while promoting early teamwork skills. The mix of short skill-based activities, followed by a small match, keeps engagement high while subtly developing technical ability.
Next lesson, we explore defending and teamwork strategies to build on today’s skills!
