Lesson Plan

Opening (5 minutes)

• Warm-up Activity: Begin with a quick, energising prefix song. Play a short and catchy song that contains examples of common prefixes. Ask students to listen carefully and raise their hands when they hear a word with a prefix.
• Introduction: Explain to students that prefixes are like magical tools that change the meaning of words. Provide examples like "happy" turning into "unhappy" or "do" becoming "redo."

Teaching and Learning (10 minutes)

• Direct Instruction: Use the whiteboard to introduce four common prefixes: un-, re-, pre-, dis-. Write each prefix on the board and discuss their meanings with simple examples:

  • un- (not) - unhappy
  • re- (again) - redo
  • pre- (before) - prehistoric
  • dis- (opposite) - disappear

• Guided Practice: Distribute prefix flashcards and root word cards to each student. Ask them to match prefixes with root words while discussing the new word meanings with a partner.

Help Me (10 minutes)

• Collaborative Activity: Divide the class into small groups. Each group receives a set of root words and a choice of prefixes. Challenge them to create as many new words as possible by pairing prefixes with root words.
• Interactive Check-In: Move around the room and assist groups, providing hints and encouragement. Use this time to support lower-level learners with additional guidance and examples.

Show Me (15 minutes)

• Creative Group Work: Provide groups with colourful card stock, scissors, glue, and markers. Task them with creating a ‘Prefix Art Poster’ where they illustrate one of their newly created words and use it in a sentence. Encourage creativity by allowing drawings and colouring.
• Performance and Feedback: Each group presents their poster to the class, explaining the word, prefix meaning, and sharing their sentence. Provide positive feedback and recognition for effort and creativity.

Plenary (5 minutes)

• Reflection: Conclude the lesson with a brief reflection. Ask students to share one new word they learned and use it in a simple sentence.
• Exit Ticket: Have students write down one thing they enjoyed about the lesson or one new prefix they learned on a piece of paper as an exit ticket.
