Under The Sea Fun
Lesson Overview
Curriculum Focus: Year 4 Physical Education
Curriculum Area: Developing balance, agility and coordination through sequences (aligns with Physical Education National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 in England).
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session, students will:
- Perform coordinated movements in a sequence, demonstrating balance and control.
- Transition between dynamic and static balances smoothly.
- Work collaboratively in small groups to create and present a short "Under the Sea" inspired movement sequence.
Lesson Structure (60 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up Activity (10 Minutes)
Aim: To prepare the body for movement, improve circulation, and set an ocean-inspired mood.
Warm-Up Song: “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid
Activity:
- Gather students in a circle. Explain that today's theme is "Under the Sea," and we’re going to warm up as ocean creatures.
- Lead a game called "Ocean Explorers":
- Move around the space demonstrating different animal movements for students to copy.
- Jellyfish: Wave arms fluidly, floating side to side.
- Crabs: Walk sideways in a low squat.
- Starfish: Jump wide with arms and legs extended.
- Dolphins: Jump forward in a fluid motion, creating an arch.
- Call out changes every 15–20 seconds.
Discussion Prompt: At the end of the warm-up, gather students together to reflect. Ask:
“What does balance mean when we move? Why is it important for animals (and humans) that live in water or on land?”
2. Skill Development (15 Minutes)
Aim: To build key skills of balance and coordination.
Activity:
Set up a carousel of 3 stations around the room. Students will work in groups of 5, rotating every 5 minutes. Explain instructions beforehand, demonstrating each station.
-
Seaweed Sway Stop:
- Students move like seaweed blowing in gentle waves. When music pauses, they must "freeze" in a balanced position (e.g., one foot, on tiptoes, or in a wide stance).
- Encourage them to play with levels—low to high—and explore different dynamics of balance.
-
Shell Stepping Stones:
- Use floor markers (imagine they are shells).
- Students step from one "shell" to another with control, balancing briefly on one leg before moving to the next.
- Add a timer challenge: Can you step across while balancing for 3 seconds per "shell"?
-
Octopus Obstacle Course:
- Set up cones or small obstacles as "octopus tentacles."
- Students navigate through the course slowly, stopping at certain points to perform a balanced pose (e.g., tree pose, table pose).
Teaching Tips:
- Use encouragement: “Wow, Lisa, you were so steady on one foot!”
- Reinforce technique: “Keep a strong, straight back when balancing—don’t lean too far forward.”
3. Group Sequence Creation (25 Minutes)
Aim: To apply balance and coordination skills in a creative sequence.
Activity Development:
-
Discussion & Modelling (5 minutes):
- Bring the whole group together.
- Brief students: “Imagine you’re underwater, moving like sea creatures! Each group will create a movement sequence that includes balances, swaying, and transitions.”
- Demonstrate examples:
- Transition from a balancing "starfish" pose to a flowing "jellyfish" walk.
- Create a smooth connection between static poses by swaying or spinning.
-
Group Work (15 minutes):
- Split students into 6 groups (5 per group).
- Each group creates a 30–40 second sequence with 4–5 movements, ensuring they include:
- One dynamic balancing move (e.g., crab scuttle with one leg and one hand lifted).
- One static balance pose (e.g., tree pose like a coral).
- A creative transition (e.g., rolling like a tumbling pebble).
- A group shape at the end (e.g., creating "waves” together or forming a big ocean creature).
-
Performance (5 minutes):
- Each group performs their sequence to the rest of the class.
- Prompt the audience to give positive feedback focused on balance and coordination:
- “What did you notice about how they balanced?”
- “Did they move smoothly between poses?”
4. Cool Down & Reflection (10 Minutes)
Activity:
- Gather everyone in a circle for a cool-down inspired by the ocean. Play “Pure Shores” by All Saints.
- Guide the students through slow stretches, reminiscent of gentle underwater movements:
- Stretch arms wide like floating kelp.
- Roll shoulders like waves rising and falling.
- Deep breaths, imagining the rhythm of ocean tides.
Reflection Questions:
- What was the most challenging part of balancing today?
- How did you work as a team to create your ocean sequence?
- If sea creatures had to balance, which one do you think would be the best at it and why?
Assessment Opportunities
Throughout the lesson, observe how students:
- Maintain control during balances in the carousel stations.
- Show creativity and teamwork while developing sequences in groups.
- Transition smoothly between movements, keeping coordinated.
Encourage active participation and ensure all students feel supported to build their confidence in their abilities.
Resources
- Music system with the songs: “Under the Sea” (The Little Mermaid) and “Pure Shores” (All Saints).
- Floor markers (or cones) for "Shell Stepping Stones."
- Cones or soft play equipment for "Octopus Obstacle Course."
- A calm, clear space designated for group performances.
Closing Note to Teachers:
This lesson is designed to engage students in both physical skills and creativity while embedding a sense of fun through the ocean theme. By incorporating cross-disciplinary elements (e.g., connecting movements to sea creatures), you can deepen their understanding of movement in a memorable way. Let the awe of the sea inspire joy!
