Overview
This 55-minute session is designed for a small Year 7 SEND group, focusing on developing secure foundational skills in column addition and subtraction without exchange. It specifically targets the National Curriculum for England objectives within the Number domain for KS2 (Years 5–6) and supports transition to KS3 (Year 7) understanding. Lesson Structure
1. Starter & Diagnostic Task (15 minutes)

- Using the magnetic digit cards on the whiteboard, recreate a problem from the diagnostic (correct version first).
- Ask guided questions such as:
- “Why do the 3s go in the hundreds column here?”
- “What happens if we put the digit 4 under the 3 in the hundreds column?”
- “Can anyone explain why aligning digits by place value is important?”
- Encourage pupils to use vocabulary: units, tens, hundreds, digit, column, place value.

3. Practical Application – Place Value Mat Activity (15 minutes)
Purpose: Embed understanding by physically moving digits and verbally explaining placement.
- Give pupils place value mats and digit cards to build numbers from diagnostic problems.
- Pupils work in pairs to build and solve sums on mats, making verbal explanations of why each digit is positioned where it is.
- Teacher circulates, prompting detailed verbal reasoning and correcting misconceptions immediately.
- Challenge task: Provide a sum with a small deliberate error and ask pairs to explain and correct it.
4. Consolidation & Plenary (10 minutes)
Purpose: Reinforce correct methods and verbal reasoning; assess understanding.
- Ask pupils one at a time to verbally explain simple addition or subtraction problems written on the board, focusing on digit placement and role of place value.
- Use “Think-Pair-Share” for pupils to articulate reasoning and then discuss with a partner.
