Active Adventure Challenge

Lesson Overview

Subject: PE
Year Group: Year 4 (Ages 7-8)
Duration: 50 Minutes
Location: Outdoor (School Field or Playground)
Curriculum Area: Physical Education – Key Stage 2
Focus: Developing coordination, teamwork, agility, and endurance through high-energy outdoor activities

This session aligns with the National Curriculum for Physical Education in England (Key Stage 2) by focusing on:

  • Developing agility, balance, and coordination
  • Engaging in competitive (and cooperative) physical activities
  • Encouraging participation in team games
  • Building stamina and resilience

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
✅ Improve their agility, coordination, and movement skills
✅ Work as a team to solve movement-based challenges
✅ Demonstrate resilience and positive sportsmanship
✅ Engage in cardiovascular and muscular endurance activities

Equipment Needed

🟢 Cones (for marking areas)
🔵 Hula hoops
🟡 Beanbags
🔴 Small hurdles or low barriers
⚫ Stopwatch (for challenge timing)
🟠 A parachute or large sheet (optional)

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up (10 Minutes) – "Mission Impossible"

💥 Concept: A dynamic warm-up that gets students physically prepared while engaging their imagination.

  • Set-Up: Mark a 10m x 10m grid with cones. Inside the grid, place hula hoops and beanbags randomly.
  • Story: The students are ‘secret agents’ who need to cross the hazardous field without touching the ‘laser beams’ (hula hoops) while collecting ‘intel’ (beanbags).
  • Rules:
    • Students can only move in specific ways (hopping, skipping, sidestepping)
    • If they touch a hula hoop, they must go back to the start
    • The aim is to collect all the ‘intel’ (beanbags) before time runs out

🟢 Why? This builds spatial awareness, coordination, and agility while making warm-ups engaging.

2. Main Activity (30 Minutes) – "The Great Outdoor Obstacle Adventure"

Concept: A circuit-style obstacle course that encourages movement variety, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Station 1: Speed Maze (Agility & Balance)

Set-Up:

  • Place cones in a zig-zag formation
  • A rope or small sticks create ‘balance beams’

🚀 Challenge:

  • Students must weave through cones and cross the balance beams
  • If they fall off the ‘beam,’ they must restart the section

Station 2: Jungle River Jump (Power & Reaction Time)

Set-Up:

  • Small hurdles/low barriers act as ‘river crossings’

🌊 Challenge:

  • Students must jump over the rivers without touching the ground in between
  • If they land in the 'water,' they must start again

Station 3: The Tunnel Crawl (Strength & Flexibility)

Set-Up:

  • Use a large sheet, tunnel, or a space underneath benches

🐍 Challenge:

  • Students must crawl low and sneak under without touching the ceiling

Station 4: Treasure Toss (Coordination & Teamwork)

Set-Up:

  • Place cones 5 metres apart
  • Have hoops placed at a distance (2 metres away)

🎯 Challenge:

  • Students work in teams to throw beanbags into hoops
  • Teams must make 10 successful throws before moving on

⏱️ Timing: Students rotate every 5 minutes with a one-minute transition between each station.

3. Cool Down (10 Minutes) – "Mindful Movement & Reflection"

📍 Activity: "Floating Feathers"

  • Students pretend to be leaves gently floating in the wind
  • Slow body movements help them cool down and relax

🟢 Stretching Sequence: Gentle stretches focusing on arms, legs, and back while taking deep breaths.

💬 Reflection Questions:

  • What was the most challenging station and why?
  • How did your team work together?
  • How did your body feel at the start vs the end?

Assessment & Differentiation

✅ Observational assessment of movement technique, participation, and teamwork
✅ Students self-reflect on their performance and effort

🔹 Support for Less Confident Movers: Reduce distances or allow alternative movement options
🔹 Challenge for More Confident Movers: Introduce a stopwatch for personal best times or require additional repetitions of certain stations

Extension Activity (for Future Lessons)

"Escape the Lava!" – A modified version of the obstacle adventure where parts of the ground are 'lava,' requiring students to use teamwork and problem-solving to navigate safely.

Teacher Notes

  • Ensure students wear appropriate footwear for running and climbing
  • Encourage continuous movement to maximise engagement and participation
  • Celebrate achievements, especially effort-based improvements

🎉 Outcome: An exciting, physically engaging PE lesson that immerses students in a story-driven challenge while building crucial movement skills!
