Recognise different assessment methods and their appropriate use (aligned with Level 3 CAVA standards)
Identify responsibilities and ethical considerations of assessors (CAVA Unit 1, assessment principle competencies)
Be familiar with assessment planning and recording evidence

Session Outline

1. Introduction and Context (15 minutes)

Brief explanation of the student’s qualification and the relevance of assessment in vocational settings
Discuss the role of an assessor as per national standards and ethical principles
Relate the importance of valid, reliable, and fair assessment to real-world vocational environments

2. Principles of Vocational Assessment (20 minutes)

Interactive discussion: What are the key principles? (validity, reliability, fairness, and safety)
Present and explain each principle using examples
Student summarises each principle in own words

3. Assessment Methods Exploration (25 minutes)

Present and define common assessment types (observation, professional discussion, questioning, product evidence)
Use a chart for visual support
Case study activity: The student identifies suitable methods for given scenarios
Discuss why certain methods suit different vocational settings and learner needs

4. Roles, Responsibilities and Ethical Considerations (20 minutes)

Explain key responsibilities: confidentiality, equality, feedback, maintaining records
Discuss ethical dilemmas through simple scenarios
Student reflects and writes a short paragraph on the importance of ethics in assessment

5. Assessment Planning and Evidence Recording (30 minutes)

Introduce the concept of an assessment plan aligned to vocational standards
Using a case study, student creates a basic assessment plan outline including assessment methods and recording strategies
Discuss importance of keeping detailed, factual, and clear records

6. Recap and Review (10 minutes)

Student verbally summarises key takeaways
Teacher provides formative feedback, asking probing questions aligned to learning outcomes
Identify any areas requiring further clarification

Assessment and Reflection

Ongoing formative assessment through questioning and scenario responses during activities
Final activity: completed assessment plan outline and ethical reflection paragraph submitted for review
Reflective discussion on how learning applies to real vocational assessing contexts
