Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 2 of 6 in the unit "Gymnastics Skills Showcase". Lesson Title: Balance and Coordination Skills Lesson Description: This lesson will introduce students to balance exercises using mats and benches. Students will practice static and dynamic balance skills, such as walking on a balance beam and performing simple poses, to enhance their coordination.

Balance & Coordination

Lesson Overview

  • Year Group: Year 5
  • Subject: Physical Education (PE)
  • Unit: Gymnastics Skills Showcase (Lesson 2 of 6)
  • Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
  • Class Size: 25 students
  • Curriculum Area: National Curriculum for England – Physical Education (Key Stage 2)
  • Focus Skills: Static and dynamic balance, coordination, core stability

This lesson will focus on developing balance and coordination through individual and partner-based activities using gym mats and benches. Students will explore different ways of balancing with control and confidence while working towards refining their technique.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate Static Balancing Skills – Hold controlled balance positions on the floor and a raised surface (bench).
  2. Perform Dynamic Balance Movements – Walk across a bench with control and transition between poses smoothly.
  3. Work Collaboratively – Create and perform a short balance sequence with a partner.
  4. Evaluate Performance – Provide peer feedback on balance and coordination using simple criteria.

Lesson Structure (45 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up (8 minutes)

  • Game: "Balance Tag"

    • One student is “It”; when tagged, players must freeze in a balance position for 5 seconds before rejoining.
    • Encourages quick reaction and coordination while warming up muscles.
  • Dynamic Stretches: (Led by teacher)

    • Arm circles
    • Leg swings
    • Ankle rotations
    • Core twists
    • Balance on one leg (progressing to eyes closed for a challenge)

2. Introduction & Demonstration (7 minutes)

  • Discussion: What is balance? Why is it important in gymnastics and other sports?

  • Teacher Demonstration:

    • Static Balance – Holding still balanced positions on the floor and bench.
    • Dynamic Balance – Walking heel-to-toe on a bench with different arm positions for stability.
  • Key Coaching Points:

    • Maintain core tight and eyes focused ahead.
    • Use controlled arm movements for stability.
    • Keep feet aligned and avoid excess movement.

3. Main Activity (25 minutes)

A. Static Balance Stations (10 minutes)

Students rotate through three stations, working individually to develop control and technique. Each student spends 3 minutes per station, with 1-minute transition time.

  1. Single-Leg Balance (on Mat) – Stand on one leg for 5 seconds, switch sides. Progress by closing eyes.
  2. Bench Balance Poses – Perform a simple shape (T-balance, arabesque, or crouched position) and hold for 5 seconds.
  3. Partner Counterbalance – Work with a partner to hold a connected pose (e.g., back-to-back sitting without hands).

B. Dynamic Balance Challenge (10 minutes)

  • Walking across a balance bench with increasing difficulty:

    1. Normal walk (arms out for balance).
    2. Heel-to-toe walk.
    3. Walking with a balance pose midway.
    4. Partner challenge – Students walk towards each other and pass safely.
  • Students provide peer feedback using two stars (positives) and a wish (improvement area).

C. Creative Balance Sequences (5 minutes)

  • Pairs create a short sequence (3 balance movements) combining static and dynamic balance.
  • Perform for another pair and provide feedback.

4. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Gentle stretches:

    • Forward reach
    • Shoulder rolls
    • Deep breaths with balance focus (standing on one leg)
  • Discussion Questions:

    • What strategies helped you stay balanced?
    • What was the biggest challenge?
    • How can balance skills help in other sports or daily activities?
  • Exit Task:

    • Each student shares one thing they improved on today with a partner.

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Criteria

  • Effective posture and control while balancing.
  • Ability to transition between poses smoothly.
  • Peer feedback participation and self-reflection.

Differentiation

For Support:

  • Extra stability support (e.g., using a wall before progressing to a bench).
  • Allow students to focus on simpler static balances before moving to dynamic tasks.

For Stretch:

  • Challenge students to link balances fluently into a routine.
  • Increase difficulty by balancing on unstable surfaces (soft mats).

Resources & Equipment

✔ Gym mats
✔ Low benches (enough for small groups)
✔ Cones for stations
✔ Peer feedback cards

Teacher Reflection

  • Did students show improved control in their balance movements?
  • Were they able to give constructive peer feedback?
  • Which activities engaged students the most?

This lesson builds towards future gymnastics skills by enhancing stability and coordination, laying the groundwork for more complex movement sequences in upcoming lessons.
