Basic Soccer Skills

Overview

Unit: Summer Sports Adventure (Lesson 3 of 8)
Duration: 45 minutes
Class Size: 25 students
Age Group: 8-9 years old (Year 4 UK curriculum)
Subject: Physical Education

This lesson focuses on developing fundamental soccer skills including dribbling, passing, and shooting. It provides structured skill drills and culminates in a small-sided game to apply learning practically. The activities promote physical literacy and teamwork, reflecting UK national curriculum PE objectives and standards.

Curriculum Links and Standards

  • UK National Curriculum for Physical Education (Key Stage 2):
Pupils should be taught to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending, and take part in competitive games, modified where appropriate.

  • Skills Covered:

    • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching
    • Play competitive games, modified as appropriate
    • Develop coordination, control and confidence in skills
  • Key Strand: Developing Physical Skills and Teamwork with focus on invasion games

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate controlled dribbling with both feet in varied directions.
  2. Execute effective passing techniques using the inside of the foot.
  3. Perform a basic shooting technique aimed at target accuracy.
  4. Apply dribbling, passing, and shooting skills in a small-sided game context.
  5. Exhibit teamwork and sportsmanship behaviours.

Equipment Needed

  • 25 size 3 footballs (1 per student where possible)
  • 10 cones for mark out drills and small pitches
  • 6 small goals or cones to act as goal posts
  • Bibs/vests to divide teams
  • Whistle and stopwatch
  • Marker cones to form grids/zones

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up (8 minutes)

Objective: Physically prepare students and focus on balance and coordination

  • Begin with "Traffic Lights" running game: Red = stop, Amber = walk, Green = run with the ball (dribble).
  • Incorporate some dynamic stretches: leg swings, high knees, butt kicks — emphasising ankle mobility and balance for control.

2. Skill Introduction & Drills (20 minutes)

A. Dribbling Drill (7 minutes)

  • Set up a zig-zag cone course.
  • Students practice dribbling using the inside and outside of both feet, focusing on close control.
  • Challenge: Count touches between cones to encourage softer touches.

B. Passing Drill (7 minutes)

  • Pair students 2m apart practicing short passes with the inside of the foot; focus on accuracy and controlled force.
  • Progression: Increase distance and introduce moving targets (passing while jogging).
  • Emphasise communication (“Mine”, “Pass”).

C. Shooting Drill (6 minutes)

  • Using small goals, students take turns shooting at goal from a marked spot 5m out.
  • Teach correct foot placement and striking with laces for power, inside foot for accuracy.
  • Encourage aiming for corners rather than centre.

3. Small-Sided Game (12 minutes)

Setup:

  • Divide class into 5 teams of 5 (4 players + 1 rotating substitute per team).
  • Using 2 small pitches (approx. 15m x 20m each), play 4 vs 4 small-sided matches, rotating teams every 4 minutes.
  • Encourage applying dribbling, passing, and shooting skills, stressing teamwork and spatial awareness.

Teacher Role:

  • Act as referee and coach, giving positive feedback, tactical cues, and reinforcing fair play.

4. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Gather students in a circle. Lead deep breathing and gentle stretching.
  • Facilitate short discussion:
    • What was the hardest skill today?
    • How did working as a team help?
    • What will you try to improve next lesson?
  • Reinforce key messages of teamwork, effort, and enjoyment.

Assessment & Differentiation

  • Assessment: Ongoing formative by teacher observation during drills and games. Use a simple checklist noting: dribbling control, passing accuracy, shooting technique, teamwork.

  • Provide verbal feedback emphasising strengths and one ‘next step’ per student.

  • Differentiation:

    • For less confident students: Reduce drill distances, allow more touches before passing.
    • For more able: Introduce weak foot usage, increase passing/shooting distance, or use defender pressure in drills.
    • Encourage peer coaching in pairs for collaborative learning.

Cross-Curricular Ideas & Enrichment

  • Maths: Counting touches, measuring distance for passing/shooting.
  • English: Use key vocabulary (dribble, pass, shoot, defend) and encourage oral communication during game.
  • Whole School: Consider organising a “Summer Sports Festival” to showcase skills learnt across lessons.

Reflection for Further Teaching

  • Note which skills were mastered quickly and which need more practice.
  • Observe engagement levels during small-sided games to adjust competitive structure.
  • Plan next lesson’s progression to more complex tactics like positioning and defending.

This plan blends skill acquisition with fun, game-based learning aligned with UK PE expectations, aiming to build confident young sportspeople through guided progression and supportive teaching strategies.
