Basketball Fundamentals

Overview

Unit: Summer Sports Adventure (Lesson 4 of 8)
Duration: 45 minutes
Year Group: Key Stage 2 (ages 7-9)
Class Size: 25 students

This lesson introduces basic basketball skills tailored for primary school pupils. It combines physical activity with teamwork and strategy to align with the UK National Curriculum for Physical Education:

  • Aim: Develop competence and confidence in fundamental basketball skills (dribbling, passing, shooting).
  • Key Stage 2 PE Curriculum Links:
    • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
    • Engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities
    • Apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will:

  • Demonstrate basic dribbling skills with control over the ball.
  • Perform chest and bounce passes accurately with a partner.
  • Attempt shooting at a hoop with proper technique.
  • Understand and apply basic tactics in a team mini-game.
  • Show teamwork and communication during play.

Resources Needed

  • Size 5 basketballs (15 - about one ball per two pupils)
  • Basketball hoops (adjusted for height) or portable cones for shooting targets
  • Bibs/vests for two teams
  • Cones for drill stations and mini-game boundaries
  • Whistle and stopwatch

Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-Up (7 minutes)

Objective: Prepare the body and mind for physical activity, improve coordination.

  • Activity:
    • Dynamic stretches focusing on legs, arms, and wrists.
    • "Dribble follow the leader" – pupils in lines dribble basketballs weaving through cones placed 2m apart.
    • Encourage light jogging with ball control to increase heart rate gradually.

Teacher Tips: Emphasise safe movement; encourage pupils to keep their eyes forward while dribbling.

2. Skill Introduction & Drills (18 minutes)

a) Dribbling (7 minutes)

  • Demonstrate correct dribbling technique: finger pads, control height of dribble, keep head up.
  • Drill:
    • Partner dribble race: pairs dribble to a cone and back; focus on control rather than speed.
    • Change hands halfway to build ambidexterity.

b) Passing (6 minutes)

  • Teach two types of passes: chest pass and bounce pass, highlighting correct hand positioning and follow-through.
  • Drill:
    • Pairs practice chest and bounce passes standing 2m apart, counting consecutive successful passes.
    • Introduce moving passes where pair jog slowly while passing.

c) Shooting (5 minutes)

  • Show the BEEF technique (Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through).
  • Drill:
    • Shooting from a close range (around 1m), focusing on form over scoring.
    • Use cones or hoops to create “shooting spots” for rotation.

Teacher's role: Circulate and offer corrective feedback, praise effort and progress.

3. Mini-Game: Team Skills Challenge (15 minutes)

Objective: Apply skills in a fun, low-competitive setting emphasising teamwork.

  • Split class into 5 teams of five. Use half or full court depending on space.
  • Rules simplified:
    • 3 passes before shooting.
    • No full-court dribbling; must pass to move the ball beyond mid court.
    • Emphasis on communication and passing accuracy rather than competition.
  • Each team plays two mini-games of 5 minutes each with brief half-time strategy huddle.

Focus points:

  • Encourage pupils to shout teammates’ names to promote communication.
  • Help pupils reflect quickly during huddles on what worked and what to improve.

4. Cool-Down & Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Slow walking around the court combined with gentle stretching.
  • Sit in a circle for a quick debrief:
    • What did you enjoy most?
    • Which skill do you want to practise more?
    • How did your team work together?

Teacher to record observations for next lesson’s planning and provide positive reinforcement.

Assessment & Differentiation

  • Formative assessment: Ongoing observation of dribbling control, passing accuracy, and shooting form.
  • Peer-assessment: Pupils give simple verbal feedback during mini-games on team communication.
  • Support: Additional adult helpers or stronger peers to assist students struggling with coordination.
  • Challenge: Encourage skilled pupils to use both hands for dribbling and attempt longer passes.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Maths: Counting passes & shots, measuring distances during drills.
  • PSHE: Developing teamwork, fair play, and communication skills.
  • Science: Discuss muscle groups used in movements during warm-up and skills.

Notes for Teachers

  • Adjust hoop height and ball size for younger or less confident learners.
  • Use positive reinforcement generously to build enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Encourage pupils to think about basketball beyond just throwing and catching, focusing on spatial awareness and strategy.
  • Consider pairing this lesson with video clips or a real basketball player guest talk in later lessons to deepen engagement.

This highly immersive and structured lesson ensures pupils build foundational basketball skills within a supportive and enjoyable environment, meeting UK curriculum expectations while promoting lifelong physical activity habits.
