Lesson Structure
Starter (10 minutes)
Activity: ‘Holiday Impressions Brainstorm’
- Show pupils a vibrant, high-quality photo slideshow of various holiday locations worldwide (beaches, mountains, cities, historical sites).
- Ask pupils to shout out words or phrases that come to mind about what makes a holiday destination good or interesting (e.g., sun, culture, adventure, food, safety).
- Record these keywords on the board under headings: Physical Features, Human Features, and Holiday Experience.
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and create a working vocabulary for comparing destinations.
Main Activity (40 minutes)
Activity 1: Country Exploration Stations (20 minutes)
Pupils split into 5 groups (6-7 pupils each). Each group rotates through five stations focusing on one country per station for 4 minutes.
- Each station has a fact card, mini-map, images, and short video clips about the country’s geography and holiday highlights.
- Pupils complete a mini worksheet categorising information under: Climate, Landscapes, Culture, Activities, and Tourism Facilities.
Teacher Role: Facilitate timing, support research, and encourage note-taking.
Activity 2: Evaluation and Justification (20 minutes)
- Groups convene and compare their countries using their notes.
- Using a blank ‘Holiday Destination Decision Matrix’ worksheet, groups assign scores (1-5) to the countries against criteria such as weather, scenery, activities, accessibility, and cultural interest.
- Pupils discuss and decide within their group which country they believe would make the best holiday destination and why, linking to geography.
- Groups prepare a 2-minute presentation, using the whiteboard or projector, to justify their choice.
Plenary (10 minutes)
Activity: Group Presentations & Class Vote
- Each group presents their chosen country and justifies their choice clearly, referencing geographical features and holiday appeal.
- After all presentations, the class votes anonymously by sticky note on the country they would like to holiday in most based on evidence presented.
- Discuss the winning country and reflect on how geography influences holiday decisions.
Assessment and Feedback
- Observe group discussions for understanding of geographical concepts and reasoning.
- Assess completed worksheets for accuracy and depth.
- Evaluate presentation clarity, use of geographical vocabulary, and quality of justification.
- Provide constructive feedback highlighting strong points and next steps for deeper enquiry.
Differentiation and Inclusion
- Provide simplified fact cards and sentence starters for pupils needing support.
- Offer extension questions for more able pupils, such as exploring sustainability issues in tourism.
- Allow use of speech-to-text or presentation apps for pupils with writing difficulties.
- Use mixed ability groups for peer support and collaborative learning.
Cross-Curricular Links
- English: Developing persuasive speaking and writing through presentations and justification.
