Teaching Instructions

my students are functional skills entry level 3. The starter for this lesson will be based on level 1 work - 6 questions. I will then do a topic from wordwall. we are presently working on a project with a budget of £2000 for a trip to paris for three days

Overview

This 90-minute lesson is designed for Year 8 students working at Functional Skills Entry Level 3, focusing on managing a realistic budget for a trip. The lesson aligns with the National Curriculum for England’s Mathematics Programme of Study, specifically developing financial capability, problem solving, and practical application of maths in real-life contexts.

Mathematics - Key Stage 3:

  • Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including scaling by simple fractions and problems involving simple rates (Number - NC Maths PoS - Years 7-9).
  • Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as pounds and pints (Measurement).
  • Develop fluency in mental and written methods of calculation (Number).
  • Interpret and present discrete and continuous data in appropriate graphical forms, including bar charts and time graphs (Statistics).

Functional Skills (Entry Level 3):

  • Work confidently with numbers, money and time in practical situations.
  • Apply arithmetic calculations to solve problems involving budgeting and financial decisions.
  • Use common measures, including currency, in practical contexts.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Solve 6 starter money/number problems at Level 1 to warm up calculation skills involving money.
  • Use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to manage a trip budget of £2000 effectively.
  • Make decisions about spending in real-life contexts by applying mathematical reasoning.
  • Present budget allocations clearly and justify choices made.

Resources

  • Printed starter worksheet (6 Level 1 money questions)
  • Interactive Wordwall activity projector/screen for budget topic
  • Project printout: Budget sheet for Paris trip (£2000 total, with categories such as transport, accommodation, food, activities)
  • Calculators
  • Whiteboards and pens for group work
  • Paper and pens for note-taking

Lesson Plan Breakdown

1. Starter Activity: Level 1 Money Problems (15 minutes)

  • Distribute the 6-question worksheet on money calculations including:
    • Adding simple receipts (£5 + £3.20 + £1.15)
    • Giving change from £10 and £20 notes
    • Basic multiplication (e.g., buying multiple tickets at £7 each)
  • Allow students to work individually with calculators.
  • Teacher circulates to support and checks answers collectively, reinforcing correct methods.

2. Introduction to Budgeting Project (10 minutes)

  • Teacher explains the trip to Paris for three days and the total budget (£2000).
  • Outline key budget categories: transport, accommodation, food, activities.
  • Present simple budgeting constraints and expectations.
  • Show the Wordwall topic for budgeting, explaining the interactive elements and objectives.

3. Interactive Budgeting Activity: Wordwall (25 minutes)

  • Students work in pairs or individually on tablets or projected Wordwall to:
    • Select and allocate costs to categories while staying within budget.
    • Use addition and subtraction to update remaining budget.
    • Problem-solve when proposed costs exceed budget limits (e.g., choosing cheaper hotels or fewer activities).
  • Encourage use of estimating and rounding where suitable.
  • Teacher facilitates by asking probing questions — “What will happen if you spend this much on food?” or “Can you find a cheaper transport option?”

4. Group Discussion and Budget Justification (20 minutes)

  • Students share their budget plans with the group.
  • Each student or pair explains a key choice they made and how they stayed within the £2000 limit.
  • Emphasise mathematical vocabulary: total, remaining budget, allocation, difference.
  • Teacher prompts students to reflect: “How did you check your calculations?” and “Why did you decide to spend more or less on that item?”

5. Consolidation and Plenary: Applying Skills (15 minutes)

  • Quick quiz using mini whiteboards:
    • Calculate change from a £50 note if you spend £37.25.
    • Multiply cost of 3 meals at £6.50 each.
    • Find total cost of accommodation for 3 nights if 1 night costs £120.
  • Discuss answers collectively, highlighting strategies and checking mental calculations.
  • Recap importance of budgeting skills for everyday life and decision-making.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observation and questioning during starter and Wordwall activity.
  • Summative: Completed budget sheets evaluated for accuracy and reasoning; participation in group discussion assessing understanding of budgeting concepts and mathematical calculations.

Differentiation

  • Support for learners with additional needs via simplified budget categories or assisted calculator use.
  • Extension challenge for confident learners: calculate how changes to one category impact remaining budget and propose alternatives.
  • Visual aids for currency and cost categories to support understanding.

Reflection and Additional Notes

  • Linking maths to real-life contexts (planning a trip) increases engagement and functional understanding.
  • Using Wordwall interactive technology offers an engaging, immediate feedback mechanism that caters to digital literacy.
  • Group discussion fosters speaking and reasoning skills aligned with the curriculum’s emphasis on mathematical communication.

This plan offers a structured, practical approach to developing Entry Level 3 maths skills aligned to budgeting within the National Curriculum framework while engaging Year 8 students meaningfully through a real-world project.
