Duration: 45 minutes
Class Size: 3 students
Age Group: Year 4 (8-9 years old)
Subject: English – Speaking and Listening
National Curriculum Reference:
- English Spoken Language – Years 3 & 4

- National Curriculum Programme of Study – Spoken Language:
- Pupils should be able to participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:
- L.O.1: Follow the main points and gist of a discussion on a familiar topic, demonstrating attentive listening (NC 1.1).
- L.O.2: Make relevant and appropriate contributions to group discussions, sharing ideas confidently (NC 1.4 & 1.5).
- L.O.3: Ask questions to clarify the meaning or gain more information during a conversation (NC 1.2).
- L.O.4: Respond clearly and confidently to straightforward questions related to the discussion topic (NC 1.4).
Resources Needed
- Small discussion prompt cards (with familiar topics e.g., favourite hobbies, pets, weekend activities)
- Whiteboard and marker
- “Question Cube” (a six-sided soft dice labelled with question stems: What? Why? How? When? Who? Where?)
- Visual timer (to keep activities time-boxed)
- Reflection sheets with sentence starters
Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity: Listening and Following (10 minutes)
Objective: To practise listening carefully and understanding the gist of a familiar topic discussion.
- Gather students in a circle. Teacher introduces a familiar topic, for example, “What are your favourite pets and why?”
- Teacher shares their own short opinion on the topic (model clear speech).
- Students take turns to share briefly. Teacher models attentive listening by paraphrasing one student’s point.
- Teacher asks a short summarising question to one student e.g., “Can you tell us what [name] said about their pet?”
- Encourage students to listen carefully and speak clearly.
Assessment: Teacher notes which students accurately recall key points to check L.O.1.
2. Main Activity: Guided Group Discussion (20 minutes)
Objective: To make relevant contributions, ask clarifying questions, and respond appropriately.
Setup:
- Use discussion prompt cards, each with a familiar topic relevant to Year 4 children’s interests (e.g., “Favourite school subject,” “Best outdoor game,” “A memorable holiday”).
- Students sit in a small group; teacher acts as facilitator.
Procedure:
- Pick one prompt card and read it aloud.
- Each student takes turns to make a contribution, encouraged to expand their point using “because,” “I think,” or “In my experience…”
- After a contribution, another student rolls the “Question Cube” and uses the question stem to ask a clarifying or follow-up question (e.g., “Why do you like playing football?”).
- The speaker answers the question clearly.
- Teacher models polite phrases for requesting clarification such as: “Could you explain that a bit more?” or “I’m not sure I understand, what do you mean?”
- Rotate roles so every student practices contributing, questioning, and responding.
Assessment: Teacher observes and notes:
- How successfully each pupil contributes relevant ideas (L.O.2)
- Their use of questioning for understanding (L.O.3)
- Ability to respond to straightforward questions (L.O.4)
3. Reflection and Self-Assessment (10 minutes)
Objective: To foster self-awareness and metacognition about speaking and listening skills.
- Hand out simple reflection sheets with sentence starters such as:
- “Today I listened carefully when…”
- “I asked a question to understand…”
- “One thing I said in the discussion was…”
- Students complete sentences individually or discuss verbally with the teacher.
- Teacher provides positive feedback and sets one individual target related to discussion skills (e.g., “Next time, try to ask two questions”).
Assessment: Completed reflections give insight into pupils’ confidence and understanding of discussion skills.
4. Plenary: Quick Fire Questions (5 minutes)
Objective: To consolidate the skill of responding to straightforward questions confidently.
- Teacher asks each student 2-3 quick, straightforward questions based on the lesson’s topics (e.g., “What is your favourite hobby?”, “Why do you enjoy it?”, “What did you learn from your friends today?”).
- Encourage full sentences and clear speech.
- Offer praise and constructive tips to encourage continuous improvement.
Differentiation
For Lower Attainers:
- Provide sentence starters and vocabulary word banks.
- Model questions and answers more explicitly.
- Allow paired discussion before whole group sharing.
For Higher Attainers:
- Encourage more extended explanations and justification of opinions.
- Introduce more complex questioning (e.g., “How would you change the story if…?”).
- Support initiating new discussion topics politely and confidently.
Extension Ideas
- Create a short role play where students take turns being the “questioner” and the “speaker” on a familiar topic, developing improvisation and social language skills.
- Record a group discussion and play it back for pupils to self- and peer-assess their listening and speaking contributions.
Teacher Notes
- Encourage a supportive and respectful environment where every contribution is valued.
- Use positive reinforcement to build confidence in speaking.
- Monitor body language and encourage eye contact to support communication skills development.
- Maintain pace with the visual timer to keep energy levels high and provide structure.
This lesson plan revolves around practical, scaffolded opportunities for Year 4 pupils to practise all aspects of spoken English in line with the National Curriculum, with a special focus on discussions around familiar topics — building speaking and listening competence in a small group setting.
