  3. Engage students with interactive discussion and critical thinking activities.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • 8 Small index cards
  • Stopwatch or timer

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction (1 minute)

  • Purpose: Briefly introduce the concept of business and its significance in everyday life.
  • Activity: Teacher asks students, “What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘business’?”
    • Write responses quickly on the whiteboard to create a brainstorming cloud.
    • Ensure students understand that businesses provide goods, services, and jobs.

2. Discussion (3 minutes)

  • Purpose: Understand the different types of businesses and their impact on society.
  • Activity: Each student receives a pre-written index card with one of the following business types: Sole Trader, Partnership, Limited Company, Franchise, Non-profit Organisation, Corporation, Retail Business, or Service Business.
    • Each student reads their card aloud and provides a one-sentence example of a business for the type they received.
  • Prompt for Discussion:
    • How do each of these businesses contribute to the economy and community?
    • Encourage students to consider the differences between these businesses in terms of structure, scale, and impact.

3. Interactive Group Exercise (3 minutes)

  • Purpose: Foster collaboration and critical thinking.
  • Activity:
    • Divide the class into two groups of four students each.
    • Each group has to come up with a business idea, briefly discuss its type, and decide on its potential impact on the community.
    • Groups quickly present their ideas to the class.
    • Use a timer to ensure each presentation is concise (30 seconds per group).

Assessment and Wrap-Up

  • Quick Assessment: Ask each student to share one thing they learned about businesses that they didn't know before the lesson.
  • Wrap-Up: Reinforce that businesses, regardless of type, are essential to the economy and communities by meeting needs and creating jobs.

Reflection

  • Prompt: Encourage students to think about what type of business they might be interested in starting or working for in the future, considering their interests and the impact they wish to make.

Differentiation

  • Ensure all students participate by evenly distributing speaking opportunities during discussion and exercises.
  • Offer support for students who might need help coming up with examples by prompting them with local business references they might be familiar with.

Extension Activities

  • As homework, have students research a well-known business and write a short paragraph on its type and community impact.
  • Encourage students to bring in news articles related to businesses for future discussions.
