Text for the Term: "Captain Cook's Brave Voyage"

Story:

One bright morning, Captain Cook and his crew set sail on a big wooden ship called the Endeavour. They were on an adventure across the deep blue sea, searching for new lands. The sky was purple and orange as the sun went down. The ship rocked gently, and the crew sang songs to keep their spirits high.

One day, a friendly dolphin followed the ship. Captain Cook smiled and said, "Look! A new friend to guide us!" After many days, they saw green islands with tall trees and colourful birds. They landed and explored carefully, writing down what they saw. Captain Cook knew this was a special place.

That night, under the twinkling stars, the crew dreamed of new adventures and friends they would find. Captain Cook's brave voyage showed everyone how wonderful it is to explore the world.

Lesson Structure (30 minutes)

1. Introduction & Engage (5 mins)

  • Gather the children on the carpet. Show a simple picture of an old sailing ship (Endeavour).
  • Ask, “What do you think this is? Who might have sailed on it?” Elicit ideas about adventures and sea journeys.
  • Introduce Captain Cook briefly as a famous explorer who went on exciting voyages.

2. Story Time with Interaction (10 mins)

  • Read the story “Captain Cook’s Brave Voyage” aloud with expression, showing illustration cards for key parts (ship, dolphin, island, crew).
  • Pause at key moments to ask:
    • “What do you think the crew is feeling when they see the dolphin?”
    • “What might they find on the island?”
    • “What does it mean to be brave like Captain Cook?”
  • Encourage children to use full sentences to answer.

3. Vocabulary Focus (5 mins)

  • Introduce and display 5 key words: voyage, crew, dolphin, island, explore.
  • Use simple definitions and pictures for each word:
    • Voyage = a long journey by ship.
    • Crew = the people who work on the ship.
    • Dolphin = a friendly sea animal.
    • Island = a piece of land surrounded by water.
    • Explore = to look around a new place.
  • Play a quick matching game: children match word cards to pictures.

4. Guided Writing Activity (8 mins)

  • Use a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like):
“Captain Cook’s ship is big. The dolphin is friendly.”
  • Write one sentence together as a class on the board, e.g., “The crew sees an island.”
  • Children then write 1-2 sentences in their books about the story using words from the vocabulary list and sentence starters. Provide sentence starters on the board such as:
    • I see...
    • Captain Cook is...
    • The ship...
  • Support children to use finger spaces, capital letters, and full stops (Year 1 Writing: transcription and composition).

5. Plenary & Review (2 mins)

  • Invite a few children to read their sentences aloud. Compliment use of vocabulary and sentence structure.
  • Recap the story in 2-3 sentences with the class.
  • Ask, “Would you like to go on an adventure like Captain Cook?”
