Change Toolkit Creation
Overview
This is Lesson 12 of 14 in the unit Embracing Change Together, designed for a class of 8 students aged 11-13 years (KS3). Over 60 minutes, students will consolidate their learning about change by creating a personalised "Change Toolkit" featuring coping strategies, positive affirmations, and resilience tips. This hands-on, reflective lesson aligns with the PSHE Association Programme of Study for KS3, addressing mental health, emotional wellbeing, and personal development.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Identify and articulate personal coping strategies for managing change.
- Create and personalise positive affirmations that promote self-belief and resilience.
- Compile practical resilience tips drawn from class discussions and own experiences.
- Develop a tangible "Change Toolkit" to support future challenges and transitions.
- Demonstrate understanding of emotional regulation and growth mindset principles.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Reflecting on Change
- Invite students to briefly recall a recent change they have experienced (e.g. moving schools, friendships, family changes).
- Use a whiteboard mind map titled "What Helps Me Cope?" — students suggest strategies and affirmations they have used or heard of.
- Encourage contributions and cluster responses under headings: Coping, Affirmations, Resilience.
Differentiation: For students who struggle to articulate, provide prompts or examples to stimulate sharing.
2. Main Activity Part 1: Personal Coping Strategies (15 minutes)
Individual Reflection and Selection
- Distribute the "Change Toolkit" templates. Direct students to the 'Coping Strategies' section.
- Using the class mind map and the printed examples, students choose or write at least 4 strategies they know or want to try (e.g. breathing exercises, talking to a friend, journaling).
- Encourage students to add personal touches or stories next to each chosen strategy explaining why it suits them.
Teacher Tip: Circulate, offering personalised scaffolding or encouragement, asking probing questions like "What strategy helped you most after a change? Why?"
3. Main Activity Part 2: Affirmations & Resilience Tips (15 minutes)
Crafting Positive Messages
- Move to the next sections: Affirmations and Resilience Tips.
- Students write 3 positive affirmations that reinforce self-confidence and adaptability (e.g. "I am strong enough to handle change," "Every challenge helps me learn").
- Then, students create up to 5 practical resilience tips — things they do or can do to bounce back from difficulties (e.g. "Take a break and breathe," "Focus on what I can control").
- Encourage creativity — use stickers or decorate these parts to make affirmations stand out.
Extension Idea: Invite students to create a simple personal motto from their affirmations.
4. Plenary: Sharing & Future Use (10 minutes)
Peer Sharing and Commitment
- Invite students to share one item from their toolkit that they think will help them most in the future.
- Optional: Pair students to exchange affirmations or resilience tips as encouragement.
- Close by highlighting the toolkit as a resource to revisit whenever change feels challenging.
- Set a reflective homework task: Use one coping strategy or affirmation from the toolkit this week and record how it felt.
5. Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson)
- Note which strategies and affirmations resonated most with students.
- Consider how to integrate these personalised toolkits into future PSHE projects or pastoral support.
- Evaluate student engagement and adapt materials for any students who may need further support with emotional wellbeing.
Classroom Management Tips
- Foster a safe and supportive atmosphere emphasising confidentiality and respect.
- Use positive reinforcement when students openly share personal experiences.
- Allocate sufficient time for quiet reflection during individual tasks.
- Adapt the materials for different learning needs (larger print, visual aids, writing frames).
Additional Notes
- This lesson encourages metacognitive skills as students think about how they cope and why strategies work.
- Personalisation taps into pupil ownership, increasing the likelihood of toolkit usage in real situations.
- Integrating mindfulness and affirmation practices subtly supports overall mental health literacy.
This highly practical and creative lesson ensures students leave with a meaningful resource tailored to their emotional wellbeing journey, fully embedding the unit's theme of Embracing Change Together.
