Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 4 of 9 in the unit "Animating Ideas Creatively". Lesson Title: Character Design Fundamentals Lesson Description: Dive into character design by exploring traits, personalities, and visual styles. Students will sketch their own characters, considering how design choices reflect character traits and story roles.

Character Design Workshop

Lesson Overview

Unit: Animating Ideas Creatively
Lesson: 4 of 9
Lesson Title: Character Design Fundamentals
Duration: 60 minutes
Class Size: 14 students
Age Group: Year 10
Curriculum Reference: UK National Curriculum – KS4 Design & Technology (Creative Media & Digital Design)

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of character design, including personality, shape language, and silhouette recognition.
  • Develop their own original character by sketching and annotating their design choices.
  • Analyse how visual design elements contribute to storytelling and character identity.
  • Experiment with different styles and approaches to develop unique, expressive characters.

Lesson Breakdown

Starter (0 – 10 mins) – The Power of Shape Language

Activity: Shape Contrast Challenge

  1. Display three basic shapes on the board: circle, square, and triangle.
  2. Ask students to quickly brainstorm personality traits associated with each (e.g., circles = friendly, squares = strong, triangles = dynamic).
  3. Show well-known animated characters (e.g., The Incredibles, Pokémon, Disney characters) and ask students to spot dominant shapes in their designs.
  4. Brief discussion: How do shapes influence how we perceive characters?

Learning Outcome:
Students recognise how fundamental shapes can define character personality and role.

Main Activity (10 – 45 mins) – Designing an Original Character

Step 1: Character Concept & Personality (10 mins)

  • Students fill out a Character Profile Worksheet with:
    • Name
    • Personality traits
    • Role in a story (hero/villain/sidekick etc.)
    • Strengths & weaknesses
    • A short backstory

Stretch Task: Consider contrasts in character design (e.g., a physically strong character with a timid personality).

Step 2: Sketching & Silhouette (15 mins)

  • Students roughly sketch their character using basic shape principles explored earlier.
  • Encourage silhouette tests (colouring in solid black) to see if their character remains readable without details.

Discussion Prompt:

  • Why do strong silhouettes matter in animation and games?

Step 3: Refinement & Style Experimentation (10 mins)

  • Students refine their sketch, adding details such as clothing, facial expressions, and accessories.
  • Introduction to line weight and exaggeration to emphasise emotions or traits.
  • They annotate key choices, explaining why they designed elements in a particular way.

Plenary (45 – 60 mins) – Present & Reflect

  • Pair-Share: Students exchange sketches and explain their design choices.
  • Group Discussion: What makes a character visually engaging?
  • Exit Ticket: One thing they’ve learned about character design today + what they’d change in their design if they had more time.

Extension Task: Research character designs from different animation studios and compare their visual storytelling techniques.

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Criteria

Students will be assessed through:
Sketch clarity & silhouette success
Creative design choices based on personality traits
Annotations explaining design decisions
Participation in discussions & reflection

Differentiation Strategies

  • Support: Provide pre-drawn shape templates for students struggling with form.
  • Challenge: Encourage high-achieving students to explore multiple art styles (e.g., anime vs. Western animation).

Resources & Materials

  • Whiteboard & Markers
  • Printouts of the Character Profile Worksheet
  • Model examples of strong silhouettes
  • Pencils, fine liners, and sketchbooks
  • Digital tablets (optional) for students interested in digital character design

Teacher Reflection & Next Steps

  • What worked well? (Engagement, understanding of concepts?)
  • Were students able to articulate clear design decisions?
  • Any refinements needed for future lessons?

Next Lesson: Bringing characters to life with movement – basic animation principles!

This highly interactive and visually engaging lesson will build strong foundational knowledge for students before they animate their characters later in the unit. It ensures creative thinking while aligning with UK education standards for digital design. 🚀
