Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 4 of 14 in the unit "Embracing Change Together". Lesson Title: Identifying Coping Strategies Lesson Description: In small groups, students will brainstorm and list strategies that have helped them cope with change in the past, creating a collective toolkit.

Coping Strategies Toolkit

Overview

This 60-minute lesson is designed for a small class of 3 students, as part of the Year 7 PSHE unit "Embracing Change Together" (Lesson 4 of 14). The focus is on identifying personal and collective coping strategies to manage change effectively. Students engage in collaborative brainstorming to create a shared "Coping Strategies Toolkit", building resilience and emotional literacy in line with the PSHE Association Programme of Study for Key Stage 3 and the DfE statutory Health Education framework (Relationships and Health Education).

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify and articulate personal coping strategies they have used to manage change.
  • Collaborate to compile a collective toolkit of effective coping methods.
  • Reflect on how these strategies support emotional wellbeing and resilience.
  • Understand that coping strategies vary and are individual, yet sharing promotes empathy.

Curriculum Links

  • PSHE Association (KS3): Developing self-awareness, managing change, and building resilience.
  • DfE Health Education (Statutory): Mental health and wellbeing; strategies for managing emotions and change.
  • British Values & SMSC: Promoting mutual respect, self-awareness, and social responsibility.

Resources Needed

  • Large A3 paper or whiteboard
  • Sticky notes or index cards
  • Coloured markers/pens
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Copies of “My Coping Strategy” worksheet (simple reflection prompts)
  • Calm music playlist (optional, for reflection)

Lesson Structure

1. Starter Activity (10 minutes) – Personal Reflection

  • Activity: Students individually complete the “My Coping Strategy” worksheet.
  • Worksheet prompts:
    • Think of a recent change you experienced (e.g., moving schools, changes in routine).
    • Write down one or two ways you coped with that change.
    • How did it make you feel?
  • Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and emotions related to change; set a reflective tone.

2. Group Brainstorming (15 minutes) – Building the Toolkit

  • Activity: Students share their personal strategies with others.
  • As each student shares, teacher writes each unique coping strategy on the board or A3 paper.
  • Use different colours to highlight strategies related to:
    • Emotional support (talking to friends/ family)
    • Physical activities (exercise, breathing exercises)
    • Cognitive techniques (positive self-talk, distraction)
    • Creative outlets (drawing, music)
  • Teacher prompts:
    • "Has anyone tried something different?"
    • "Why do you think some strategies work better for others?"
    • "Can you think of new ones combining your ideas?"

3. Deepening Understanding (10 minutes) – Categorisation & Discussion

  • Categorise the strategies into ‘Immediate’, ‘Short-term’, and ‘Long-term’ coping methods.
  • Discuss why some strategies might be more helpful at different times.
  • Reflect on the idea that coping is personal and sometimes trial and error is important.

4. Creative Application (15 minutes) – Coping Strategies Toolkit Creation

  • Activity: Using the brainstormed list, students create a "Coping Strategies Toolkit" poster or booklet.
  • Each student contributes by designing a section using drawings, keywords, or brief explanations (e.g., “Breathing deeply helps me feel calm”).
  • Encourage creative presentation (comic strips, infographics).
  • Optionally, add QR codes or links to relaxation podcasts recommended by the teacher for further exploration.

5. Plenary & Meta-cognition (10 minutes) – Reflecting on Learning

  • Students share their part of the toolkit with the group.
  • Teacher facilitates a brief discussion linking back to the unit aim: “How can this toolkit help us embrace change together?”
  • Final reflection question: "Which new strategy might you try next time change happens?"
  • Option for students to record a short voice note or journal entry for ongoing personal reflection.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Formative assessment through observation of contributions during brainstorming and discussion.
  • Evaluate students’ ability to articulate and reflect on coping strategies.
  • Review the final toolkit for evidence of understanding and creativity.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback highlighting insight, empathy, and collaborative skills.

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Provide sentence starters for written activities for emerging writers.
  • Use visual prompts for those who benefit from graphical support.
  • Encourage equal participation by using turn-taking prompts and positive reinforcement.
  • Offer examples of coping strategies culturally diverse and sensitive to varied backgrounds.

Extension Ideas

  • Assign students to try one new coping strategy over the week and report back next lesson.
  • Invite a mental health professional or counsellor for a follow-up workshop on resilience.
  • Create a digital version of the toolkit for the school intranet as a resource for wider student support.

Teacher Reflection Prompts

  • Did students feel safe to share personal experiences?
  • Which strategies resonated most, and why?
  • How effectively did the group collaborate?
  • What adjustments might improve engagement or understanding next time?

This lesson embraces active participation, emotional literacy, and creative expression to build a tangible and lasting resource that empowers students to cope positively with change, in line with progressive UK PSHE education priorities.
