By the end of this session, students will be able to:

  • Recognise that different colours, patterns, and materials in costumes symbolise cultural identity.
  • Understand that costumes are an important part of cultural dances.
  • Make and wear a simple costume element that reflects cultural patterns or colours.
  • Demonstrate respect and curiosity for cultures different to their own through dance and costume.

Linked to UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework:

  • Expressive Arts and Design: Exploring and using media and materials; Being imaginative.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Making relationships, managing feelings and behaviour, understanding others.
  • Communication and Language: Listening and attention, understanding.

Resources

  • Large fabric pieces (scarves, sashes) in bright colours and patterns (safe for children to wear)
  • Fabric markers, stickers, or non-toxic fabric paint pens
  • Paper cutouts of simple costume accessories (crowns, necklaces) with cultural patterns
  • Mirrors for self-viewing
  • Visual aids: pictures of children or dancers in various cultural costumes (diverse and age-appropriate)
  • Music from different cultures associated with the dances covered in the unit
  • Floor markers or mats for dance space

Lesson Outline

1. Welcome and Recap (5 minutes)

  • Gather students in a circle.
  • Briefly revisit what they have learned about cultural dances in previous lessons. Use simple language: “We have learned about dancing from around the world, now let’s talk about the special clothes people wear when they dance.”
  • Show visual aids of dancers in costumes from different cultures. Ask simple questions: “What colours do you see? What do you think the patterns mean?”

2. Interactive Storytelling: Costume Significance (7 minutes)

  • Tell a short, lively story about a child from another culture preparing for a dance festival and choosing special costumes.
  • Highlight features such as bright colours symbolising happiness or nature patterns showing respect to the environment.
  • Encourage children to notice the textures (shiny, soft, rough) and why these might be important.
  • Use props (scarves, fabric pieces) during storytelling for tactile engagement.

3. Creative Costume Making (12 minutes)

  • Children receive simple costume elements: fabric sashes, paper crowns, or necklaces.
  • Encourage them to decorate these using fabric pens and stickers.
  • Prompt them to choose colours and patterns deliberately – "Maybe you want your sash to be bright red like the sun or blue like the sky!”
  • Support and discuss the choices with children individually or in pairs, asking why they picked their colours/patterns.
  • Assist children in safely putting on their costume elements.

4. Movement with Costumes (5 minutes)

  • Play music from the cultural dances they have explored in the unit to help children feel immersed.
  • Guide simple dance movements while wearing their costume elements, encouraging them to notice how the costumes move with their bodies.
  • Emphasise joy, respect, and confidence.

5. Reflection and Sharing (1 minute)

  • Gather children back into a circle.
  • Invite a few children to share something about their costume and how it made them feel.
  • Reinforce the idea that costume colours and patterns tell stories about people and places.

Assessment and Differentiation

  • Formative Assessment: Observation of engagement, ability to talk about colours/patterns, and participation in costume-making and dance.
  • Differentiation:
    • Provide extra support with fine motor skills for children struggling with decorating.
    • Allow more advanced children to create more detailed patterns or select more intricate designs.
    • Use visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic instructions to support all learners.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Art and Design: Pattern recognition and use of colours in creative tasks.
  • Communication: Vocabulary building related to colours, textures, and cultural concepts.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Expressing identity and cultivating respect for diversity.

Teacher’s Reflection and Next Steps

  • Reflect on children’s understanding of cultural costume significance—were they able to connect colour and pattern to meaning?
  • Plan how to incorporate costume elements into the final dance presentation in lesson 6.
  • Consider displaying photos or paintings of children’s costume creations to celebrate cultural diversity.

Tips for a Successful Lesson

  • Create a calm but stimulating environment that sparks curiosity (e.g., soft cultural music playing quietly beforehand).
  • Use clear, simple language with lots of positive reinforcement.
  • Encourage imagination and personal expression—there is no ‘wrong’ choice in costume decoration.
  • Be mindful and culturally sensitive in presenting cultural information, striving to celebrate rather than stereotype.

This lesson combines expressive arts with physical activity, supporting Reception children in holistic development while meeting EYFS goals and nurturing respect for cultural diversity through dance and costume.
