Creative Spider Making

Overview

This engaging 15-minute activity invites Reception children to create edible spiders using fairy cakes, breadsticks, and icing. It aligns with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, focusing on Expressive Arts and Design, Physical Development, and Communication and Language.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, children will:

  • Develop fine motor skills by manipulating small objects (breadsticks, icing).
  • Explore creative expression through designing their own spider characters.
  • Use language to describe the process and their spider creations.
  • Begin to understand simple concepts about spiders (number of legs, body parts).

EYFS Links

  • Expressive Arts and Design: Using media and materials to create with a purpose; building stories around their creations.
  • Physical Development: Developing fine motor skills through using tools (icing tubes, placing breadsticks).
  • Understanding the World: Recognising features of living things (introduction to spiders).
  • Communication and Language: Talking about what they are making, asking and answering questions.

Resources

  • Mini fairy cakes (one per child)
  • Thin breadsticks (approx. 8 per child)
  • Tubes of icing (various colours)
  • Small plates or mats
  • Child-safe plastic knives or spreaders
  • Wipes and aprons

Preparation

  • Arrange materials on a low table, easy to reach for all children.
  • Ensure each child has their own set of materials to prevent sharing cross-contamination.
  • Pre-cut any breadsticks if needed to ensure safe length for children to handle.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (3 minutes)

  • Gather the children in a circle. Show them a completed edible spider as an example.
  • Brief discussion: “What animals do spiders remind you of? How many legs do they have?”
  • Emphasise spider features (8 legs, round body, eyes).
  • Explain: “Today, we’re going to make our own spider snacks using fairy cakes and breadsticks!”

2. Activity (10 minutes)

  • Step 1: Give each child a fairy cake as the spider’s body.
  • Step 2: Assist children to gently break and insert breadsticks into the sides of the fairy cake to form 8 legs (4 on each side).
  • Step 3: Using the icing tubes, demonstrate how to add eyes and patterns on the spider’s body. Encourage children to be creative.
  • Support children as needed, praising their efforts and encouraging descriptive conversation (e.g., “Tell me about your spider’s legs!”).
  • Offer vocabulary support: legs, body, eyes, sticky, long, short, colours.

3. Sharing & Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Invite each child to show their spider and describe what they did.
  • Reinforce counting legs together: “How many legs does your spider have?”
  • Celebrate their creations with positive feedback.
  • Optional: Children may gently taste their spiders or take them home.

Differentiation

  • For children needing extra support, adult can pre-poke holes for breadsticks or assist with icing application.
  • Encourage more confident children to create storylines about their spider (e.g. “My spider loves to spin webs!”).

Assessment & Reflection

  • Observe children’s fine motor control during assembly.
  • Listen for use of descriptive vocabulary and numerical awareness.
  • Note engagement levels and ability to follow instructions.

Extension Ideas

  • Link to a story about spiders (e.g. “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle).
  • Explore simple symmetry by arranging legs evenly on both sides.
  • Conduct a sensory exploration with different textures (icing, cake, breadsticks).

This imaginative, hands-on activity supports the EYFS holistic development approach, combining creativity with practical skills and language development — perfect for sparking young learners’ curiosity and joy!
