Designing Celebration Food

Lesson Overview

Duration: 60 minutes
Class Size: 30 students
Unit: Celebration Food Artistry
Lesson Number: 2 of 3
Age Group: Year 5 (ages 9-10)

Learning Objective

Students will develop their creative thinking and design skills by conceptualising a new food item for a celebration, which will be included in a collaborative picnic blanket project.

Success Criteria

Students will produce a design plan that includes:

  • A detailed sketch of their party food item.
  • A written description of its ingredients and significance within the context of a celebration.

Lesson Structure

1. Retrieval Task (5 minutes)

  • Objective: Activate prior learning and encourage sharing.
  • Activity: In pairs, students will share one idea from their visual notes that they found interesting and explain why. After 2 minutes of sharing, select 4 pairs randomly to share their ideas with the whole class.
  • Outcome: Students will reconnect with their previous lesson’s content and build confidence in sharing their thoughts.

2. Introduction to Design Task (10 minutes)

  • Objective: Introduce the focus of the lesson and the elements of design.
  • Activity:
    • Briefly recapitulate the previous lesson's visual notes and discuss potential themes and flavours in celebration food.
    • Show examples of unique party foods with vibrant colours, shapes, and themes through images or physical examples, covering various cultures to inspire creativity.
    • Discuss the importance of aesthetics and significance in food presentation for celebrations.
  • Outcome: Students will gain an understanding of what constitutes good design in food artistry and draw inspiration from cultural diversity.

3. Brainstorming Session (15 minutes)

  • Objective: Generate ideas for designing their party food item.
  • Activity:
    • Provide students with brainstorming worksheets featuring prompts (e.g., What colours do you associate with celebration? What shapes might your food item take?).
    • Encourage students to jot down prompts inspired by their unique tastes and cultural backgrounds.
    • Facilitate a "Gallery Walk" where students can showcase their ideas on the board. This encourages visual thinking and peer consultation.
  • Outcome: Students will successfully generate creative ideas, taking different design aspects into account.

4. Design Plan Creation (20 minutes)

  • Objective: Students will produce detailed design plans for their own party food item.
  • Activity:
    • Distribute design plan templates that include sections for sketches, ingredient listings, and significance descriptions.
    • Encourage creativity in sketches, allowing for different artistic techniques (e.g., collage, painting).
    • Remind students to articulate the significance of their food item, linking it to celebrations they’ve experienced or observed.
  • Outcome: Students create a comprehensive design plan that synthesises their gathered ideas and showcases their personal brand of creativity.

5. Class Sharing and Feedback (10 minutes)

  • Objective: Foster collaborative feedback and improve design concepts.
  • Activity:
    • In groups of five, students present their design plans to peers, receiving constructive feedback using a structured protocol.
    • Encourage students to ask questions and suggest improvements or alternatives.
    • After peer feedback, have a few volunteers share their designs with the whole class for additional feedback.
  • Outcome: Students develop presentation skills and gain insights into how to refine their designs based on peer input.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Visual notes from the previous lesson
  • Brainstorming worksheets
  • Design plan templates (A3 sheets)
  • Colouring materials (pencils, markers, paints)
  • Examples of celebration food artefacts or images

Assessment

  • During the design plan presentation and peer feedback sessions, assess students based on their engagement, creativity, and ability to articulate their ideas. Focus on how well students incorporate feedback into their design where applicable.
