Overview
A lively and imaginative 30-minute session using the story Dinosaur Zoom to develop communication, understanding of stories, and physical expression in Reception children (ages 4-5). This lesson aligns tightly with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which underpins the National Curriculum for England for Early Years.
Learning Objectives
Communication and Language (EYFS: Listening, Attention and Understanding / Speaking):
- Children will listen attentively to the story Dinosaur Zoom, demonstrating understanding by answering simple questions about the narrative and characters.
- Children will use new vocabulary related to dinosaur movements and emotions, enhancing expressive language.
Physical Development (EYFS: Moving and Handling):
- Children will engage in gross motor activities by acting out dinosaur movements featured in the story, developing coordination and spatial awareness.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (EYFS: Making Relationships / Managing Feelings and Behaviour):
- Children will cooperate in small groups during role-play activities, practising turn-taking and sharing.
- Children will express feelings about the story and characters, fostering emotional literacy.
Literacy (EYFS: Reading):

- Children will explore descriptive language associated with the story.
Resources Needed
- Dinosaur Zoom storybook by Penny Dale
- Large open space or carpeted area for movement
- Dinosaur masks or simple cardboard cut-outs (optional)
- Picture cards showing different dinosaurs and their movements
- Story sequencing picture cards
- Whiteboard and markers or large sticky notes
Lesson Structure
1. Welcome and Introduction (5 minutes)
- Gather children in a circle on the carpet.
- Show the front cover of Dinosaur Zoom and ask, “What do you think this story might be about?”
- Introduce new vocabulary that will appear in the story (e.g., slither, stomp, zoom, flutter). Model pronunciation and meanings briefly with actions.
EYFS Link: Communication and Language – listening attentively and understanding new vocabulary
2. Story Time with Interactive Pause Points (10 minutes)
- Read the story aloud with enthusiasm, using lively voices and expressions to engage the children.
- Pause after each page and ask questions such as:
- “What kind of dinosaur is this?”
- “How do you think this dinosaur moves?”
- “Can you show me that movement with your body?”
- Allow children to demonstrate the movements, reinforcing vocabulary and kinaesthetic learning.
EYFS Link: Literacy – comprehension, Communication and Language – speaking and listening, Physical Development – moving and handling
3. Dinosaur Movement Adventure (10 minutes)
- Explain that the children will become dinosaurs and move around the room zooming, slithering, stomping, or flying like in the story.
- Call out dinosaur types or movements from the story, encouraging children to move accordingly.
- Introduce a game element:
- “When I say ‘Dinosaur Zoom,’ freeze in your dinosaur pose!”
- Encourage balancing on one leg or crawling carefully, aiming to develop balance and control.
EYFS Link: Physical Development – gross motor skills, Personal, Social and Emotional Development – managing self
4. Story Sequencing and Reflection (5 minutes)
- Use picture cards representing key story moments in mixed order.
- Invite children to help place the pictures in the correct sequence on the whiteboard or floor.
- Ask children to retell the story in their own words using the sequence as a guide.
- End by asking, “Which dinosaur was your favourite and why?” to encourage personal connection and language use.
EYFS Link: Literacy – sequencing stories, Communication and Language – speaking, Personal, Social and Emotional Development – self-expression
Assessment Opportunities
- Observe children’s ability to listen and respond to story questions.
- Note use of new vocabulary during movement and discussion.
- Watch for participation in movement activities showing coordination and physical confidence.
- Assess understanding of sequence during the card activity.
- Record expressions of feelings and preferences about the story and characters.
Differentiation
- Provide dinosaur masks or props for children needing extra sensory engagement.
- Offer simpler or more complex movements to match physical abilities.
- Support non-verbal children with gesture prompts during story discussion.
- Work in smaller focus groups to aid quieter children in sharing ideas.
Extension Ideas
- Create a dinosaur footprint trail outdoors for children to follow and explore movement pathways.
- Set up a ‘Dinosaur Zoom’ story corner with props for continuous imaginative play.
- Involve children in crafting their own dinosaur scales or tails for role play.
By combining story, movement, and expressive language, this lesson introduces Reception children to narrative understanding and physical development in a way that delights and engages while fully following the EYFS foundations of the National Curriculum for England.
