Teaching Instructions

I am doing on a lesson on how to respond positively to change. The children will be role playing scenarios and I will announce a change to the scenario. The children need to act out a positive response.

Overview

This lesson supports Primary 4 pupils to develop social and emotional skills related to embracing change positively. Children will actively role-play scenarios where a change is introduced, encouraging adaptability, resilience, and positive communication aligned with Curriculum for Excellence Health and Wellbeing experiences and outcomes.

Experiences and Outcomes (Es and Os):

  • HWB 2-28a: I am aware of how my body reacts to changes, and I am learning ways to cope with them.
  • HWB 2-29a: I can respond in a socially appropriate way to changing social situations.
  • HWB 2-31a: I can recognise and show respect for the rights of others.

Organisers:

  • Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing
  • Planning for Choices and Changes

Learning Intentions

  • I am learning how to respond positively when faced with unexpected changes.
  • I am developing skills in collaboration and communication during changing situations.
  • I am recognising my feelings and managing them in social situations.

Success Criteria

  • I can listen to others and work cooperatively in role-playing activities.
  • I can demonstrate at least two ways to respond positively to a change in a scenario.
  • I can describe how I felt during the change and explain what helped me respond well.

Resources

  • Pre-prepared role-play scenario cards (situations relevant to Primary 4 experiences)
  • Change prompt cards (to introduce unexpected changes)
  • Emotion cards (visual aids showing various feelings)
  • Large open space for role-play activities
  • Whiteboard and markers for reflections
  • “Feelings thermometer” visual chart

Lesson Structure (45 minutes)

1. Introduction & Engagement (5 minutes)

  • Warm-up discussion:
Teacher asks, “Can you remember a time when something changed and you had to deal with it?”
Invite 2-3 pupils to share briefly.
  • Introduce lesson aim: learning to respond positively to change and why this helps us stay calm and work well with others.

2. Input & Modelling (7 minutes)

  • Show “Feelings thermometer” and briefly discuss common reactions to change (e.g., worried, excited, confused).
  • Model a simple scenario with one student volunteer:
Scenario: “You are playing your favourite game at break time.”
Change announced: “Now your friend wants to play a different game.”
  • Model a positive response to this change, e.g., “That sounds fun! Let’s try it together.”

3. Main Activity: Collaborative Role-Play with Change (25 minutes)

  • Divide class into groups of 5 (for 25 pupils total). Each group receives a baseline scenario card. Example scenarios:

    • Group 1: Starting a new club that changes activities each week.
    • Group 2: A class project where roles are shuffled unexpectedly.
    • Group 3: Planning a picnic and the weather suddenly changes.
    • Group 4: A school assembly with a surprise visit.
    • Group 5: Changing seating arrangements in the classroom.
  • Groups assign roles and practice acting out their scenario for 5 minutes.

  • Teacher moves around and then announces a “change” using a pre-prepared change prompt card for each group (e.g. weather changes, a team member is absent, the project deadline is moved forward).

  • Groups continue role-playing incorporating the change, focusing on showing positive responses (offer solutions, show understanding, stay calm).

  • Teacher encourages using emotion and change cards for language support.

4. Plenary & Reflection (8 minutes)

  • Bring the class back together.
  • Each group shares one positive response they used and how it made the situation better.
  • Whole-class discussion using sentence starters:
    • “When things change, I feel…”
    • “One way I can stay positive is…”
  • Teacher writes key strategies on the board (e.g., take deep breaths, talk to a friend, think of a new plan).
  • Pupils self-assess against success criteria with a quick thumbs up/middle/down.

Differentiation & Inclusion Strategies

Learner GroupStrategy
Additional Support NeedsUse emotion cards with facial expressions for ideas; pair with a peer buddy during role-play; allow simplified language or one-sentence responses.
More Able LearnersChallenge to suggest alternative positive responses or lead group discussion on managing feelings.
EAL LearnersPre-teach key vocabulary (e.g., change, adapt, calm, cooperate); use visuals and gestures during role-play.
Varied Social SkillsRole-play in smaller groups or pairs to build confidence before whole-class sharing.

Assessment for Learning

  • Observe pupils’ role-play: Can they demonstrate positive verbal and non-verbal responses to change?
  • Listen for language that expresses understanding and adaptation to change.
  • Use reflection discussion to assess pupils’ ability to articulate feelings and coping strategies.

Extension Ideas

  • Create a “Positive Responses to Change” poster or class charter to remind pupils of strategies.
  • Journal entry: Pupils draw and write about a time they handled change well.
  • Buddy system: Pupils support each other when facing changes outside the classroom.

This plan encourages active and reflective learning, fosters emotional literacy, and builds resilience — all vital components of Health and Wellbeing in Curriculum for Excellence. It allows authentic social interaction in a meaningful context suitable for Primary 4 learners.
