Enhancing Driving Independence

Overview

This 120-minute session is designed for a single learner aged 17 and over to develop advanced driving skills focused on achieving independence, confidence, and safe decision-making on the road. The training aligns with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) standards and the National Curriculum for England’s Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education framework, emphasising responsibility, risk management, and independence around driving.

Lesson Breakdown

0–15 minutes | Introduction & Initial Talk-Through

Activity: Discuss the day's objectives and review the Levels of Driving Instructor progression framework (Focus on Level 3: Guidance, moving toward Level 5: Independence).
Teacher Role: Facilitate a talk-through session encouraging the learner to verbalise existing knowledge on hazard perception and route planning.
Assessment: Informal questioning to gauge learner’s baseline understanding.

15–50 minutes | Route Planning & Risk Assessment

Activity: Learner independently plans a 20-minute driving route covering diverse conditions (residential, main roads, roundabouts).
Teacher Role: Guide learner through completing a risk assessment form identifying possible hazards on the route.
National Curriculum Connection: Encourages PSHE competencies of autonomy and risk management.
Assessment: Evaluate accuracy and completeness of the risk assessment.

50–100 minutes | Independent Driving with Real-Time Talk-Through

Activity: Learner drives the planned route, performing talk-through commentary of observations, decisions, and hazard responses aloud — verbalising reasoning behind every manoeuvre.
Teacher Role: Provide minimal intervention, only correcting safety-critical errors to enhance learner confidence and independence; record key moments for later analysis.
Focus: Develop Level 4 (Support) moving toward Level 5 (Independence) as per ADI framework.
Assessment: Monitor use of mirrors, speed, signaling, anticipation of hazards, and adherence to road laws.

100–115 minutes | Reflective Review & Self-Evaluation

Activity: Learner reviews recorded talk-through and evaluates their own performance against success criteria (observation, control, hazard awareness).
Teacher Role: Facilitate reflective dialogue using open questions to promote critical thinking and help the learner identify areas for self-improvement.
Curriculum Link: Fosters metacognitive skills aligned to English curriculum goals.

115–120 minutes | Summary & Next Steps

Activity: Set personalised targets based on learner reflection and instructor feedback. Plan for independent driving challenges in subsequent lessons.
Teacher Role: Provide constructive feedback encouraging growth mindset and safe driving attitudes.

Assessment and Evaluation

Formative assessments through observation and questioning during talk-through and route planning stages.
Summative assessment via learner self-evaluation paired with instructor’s professional judgement against ADI standard competencies.
Success indicators: Increasing talk-through independence, accuracy in hazard anticipation, consistent application of vehicle control, and thoughtful risk analysis.
