Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Identify and classify a variety of 2D shapes commonly seen in architecture (e.g., triangles, rectangles, squares, parallelograms, trapeziums, and hexagons).
- Explain the properties of these shapes (e.g., number of sides, vertices, parallel sides, right angles).
- Recognise how 2D shapes are combined and arranged in architectural features.
- Create a collaborative 2D shape collage reflecting their understanding of shape use in architecture.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
“Shape in Architecture Brainstorm”
- Show high-quality images of famous buildings and architectural structures (e.g., the Gherkin in London, the Sydney Opera House, classical buildings with columns).
- Ask pupils to shout out all the 2D shapes they can spot in these pictures.
- Record ideas on the board, grouping by shape types and discussing briefly the properties that help identify these shapes.
Teacher focus: Emphasise vocabulary such as vertices, parallel sides, and regular/irregular shapes. Challenge pupils to identify less obvious shapes like trapeziums and parallelograms.
2. Main Activity Part 1 - Shape Identification and Classification (15 minutes)
- Hand out ‘Shape Detective’ worksheets and shape property mats.
- In pairs, pupils look around the classroom or use printed photos of local buildings provided by the teacher to identify at least five different 2D shapes visible in architectural features.
- For each shape identified, pupils must:
- Name the shape
- Draw it to scale in their worksheet
- Write down its key properties (e.g., number of sides, presence of right angles, parallel sides).
- Circulate the room to assist, ask probing questions, and ensure use of correct terminology.
3. Main Activity Part 2 - Creating a Shape Collage (25 minutes)
- Pupils form groups of 5 and use pre-cut coloured shapes to create a large collage of an architectural structure of their choice (teacher provides photos for inspiration or they can design an original building).
- Encourage pupils to:
- Think carefully about how shapes fit together, highlighting different properties (e.g., combining rectangles and triangles to form rooftops or windows).
- Use rulers to measure sides and ensure neatness, discussing symmetry and repetition in architecture.
- Throughout the activity, prompt with questions:
- How do these shapes support each other in building design?
- Why might architects choose these particular shapes?
- Each group prepares a short explanation of their collage’s shapes and properties.
4. Plenary (10 minutes)
- Groups present their shape collages to the class, explaining the different shapes used and why they think those shapes were chosen in architecture.
- Use a quick 'thumbs up/down' or mini quiz on shape properties to consolidate learning. Example questions:
- “Which shape has exactly one pair of parallel sides?” (Answer: trapezium)
- “How many vertices does a hexagon have?”
- Summarise by reinforcing how 2D shapes are foundational to the strength and beauty of buildings.
