Exploring a Farm

Curriculum Area

Subject: Geography
Key Stage: Key Stage 1 (Year 1)
National Curriculum Link: Human and Physical Geography – Identify key physical features, including farm environments, and key human features, such as buildings found on a farm.

Lesson Duration

Total Time: 40 minutes

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe key features of a farm.
  • Understand the difference between natural and human-made farm features.
  • Recognise the importance of farms in providing food.

Resources

  • Large printed images or slides of different types of farms (dairy, arable, livestock).
  • Toy animals or farm models.
  • Worksheets with farm scenes for drawing and labelling.
  • A basket with different food items that come from a farm.
  • Sound clips of farm animal noises.

Lesson Structure

1. Engage – Farm Sounds Guessing Game (10 minutes)

  • Play different sounds of farm animals and ask students to guess which animal it belongs to.
  • Discuss where these animals live and introduce the concept of a farm.
  • Show large printed images or slides of different farms (dairy, arable, livestock) and ask students what they notice about them.

2. Explore – Features of a Farm (15 minutes)

  • Introduce key vocabulary: barn, field, tractor, scarecrow, farmhouse, crops, pond, hedgerow, fence, stable.
  • Have students take turns picking toy farm animals from a box. For each animal, discuss its home on the farm (e.g., "Where does a cow live? What food does it provide?").
  • Contrast natural features (e.g. fields, ponds, hedgerows) with human-made features (e.g. barns, fences, farmhouses).
  • Pass around a basket with farm-related food (e.g., cheese, bread, apple, wool) and explain how farms provide food and materials for daily life.

3. Explain – Farm Scene Drawing (10 minutes)

  • Give students a worksheet with an outline of a blank farm scene.
  • Ask them to draw and label at least four key features they would find on a farm.
  • Circulate and engage students with questions: "What do farm animals need to survive?", "Why do farmers use tractors?"

4. Evaluate – Farm Feature Sorting (5 minutes)

  • Use small picture cards of farm elements (e.g. river, barn, mountain, tractor).
  • Challenge students to sort these into two categories: "Natural" vs "Human-Made".
  • Discuss their choices as a class.

Plenary – Quick Quiz

  • Ask students quick-fire questions:
    • Name one human-made feature on a farm.
    • Where do cows live?
    • Why do farmers grow crops?
    • What machine helps farmers plough fields?
  • Celebrate learning with a "Farm Experts" clap!

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide visual word mats with images for EAL or lower-ability students.
  • Stretch: Ask higher-ability students to explain why farms are in the countryside and discuss how seasons affect farms.

Assessment

  • Observing engagement during the guessing game.
  • Checking the accuracy of drawings and labels.
  • Evaluating correct categorisation in the sorting activity.

Teacher’s Reflection

  • Were students excited about the topic?
  • Did they demonstrate understanding of farm features?
  • What could be improved for the next lesson?

This highly interactive lesson immerses students in farm life, blending hands-on discovery with meaningful discussions – capturing their curiosity while ensuring deep learning. 🚜🌾
