Exploring Everyday Materials

Objective

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and classify everyday materials such as wood, plastic, glass, and metal. They will engage in hands-on exploration and discussion, fostering a deeper understanding of the properties and uses of these materials.

    • Physical Development: Handling equipment and tools safely and with increasing control.

Duration

20 minutes

Group Size

10 students

Resources Needed

  • A variety of everyday objects made from different materials (wooden block, plastic bottle, glass jar, metal spoon)
  • Sorting trays or baskets
  • Picture cards representing different materials
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Aprons or old T-shirts (for mess protection during exploration)

Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Greeting and Overview:

    • Welcome students and gather them in a circle.
    • Briefly explain the topic: “Today, we’re going to be exploring the different materials that make up our everyday objects!”
  2. Engagement Question:

    • Ask, “Can anyone tell me what material this [hold up a wooden block] is made of?”
    • Facilitate discussion. Encourage students to share their own examples of materials they know.

Main Activity (10 minutes)

  1. Material Exploration:

    • Divide students into small groups (2-3 students each).
    • Hand out trays/baskets with 3-4 objects from different materials to each group. Ensure that each group has a mix of wood, plastic, glass, and metal.
  2. Investigating Objects:

    • Encourage students to touch, hold, and examine the objects. Ask guiding questions:
      • "How does this feel?" (smooth, rough, hard, soft)
      • "What colour is it?"
      • "Can you hear anything when you shake it?”
  3. Sorting Activity:

    • Following their investigations, provide each group with picture cards of the four materials.
    • Ask them to sort their objects based on the material to which they belong.
    • Roam around to assist groups, using prompts to encourage discussion about properties (e.g., “Which material do you think is the strongest?”).

Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Group Reflection:

    • Regroup as a whole class. Ask each group to share one object they explored and the material it is made from.
    • Write their responses on the whiteboard under the relevant material headings.
  2. Recap Activity:

    • Quickly review the material categories. Use the picture cards to reinforce learning.
    • Ask students, “Can you think of any other objects at home that might be made from these materials?”

Assessment

  • Observation: Monitor student engagement and participation during the exploration and sorting activity.
  • Verbal Responses: Assess understanding through group discussions and reflections shared at the end of the lesson.

Extension Activities (if time allows)

  • Have students draw their favourite object and label the material it is made from.
  • Encourage students to bring in an object from home made of a material discussed and share with the class in the next lesson.

Differentiation

  • For students who need additional support, provide tactile materials or visuals.
  • For advanced students, encourage them to compare materials and discuss properties in greater detail.

Health and Safety

  • Remind students to handle objects carefully, especially glass items.
  • Ensure that all objects are safe for handling and age-appropriate.

This highly interactive and engaging lesson aims to inspire curiosity about the materials that surround students, grounding their explorations in tangible, real-world examples.
