Exploring India through Art

Learning Objective

Students will create artwork inspired by Indian culture, focusing on traditional elements like Rangoli patterns and the vibrant colours often associated with India, enhancing their understanding of global cultures as outlined in the UK National Curriculum for Art and Design.

Curriculum Links

  • Art and Design: Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products (National Curriculum, Key Stage 1).
  • Understanding the World: Explore the similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among different countries (Early Years Foundation Stage, Understanding the World).

Resources Needed

  • A3 paper (x17)
  • Coloured chalk or pastels (various colours)
  • Markers or crayons (various colours)
  • Images of Rangoli patterns and Indian festivals (printed visuals)
  • A large, clear surface for students to work on (e.g., classroom floor or tables)

Time Allocations

  • Introduction: 5 minutes
  • Activity: 15-20 minutes
  • Cleanup and Reflection: 3-5 minutes

Lesson Breakdown

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Gather the students together in a circle on the carpet area.
  2. Show images of Rangoli patterns and talk briefly about their significance in Indian culture, especially during festivals.
    • Explain that Rangoli designs are colourful patterns made on the ground to welcome guests and celebrate special occasions.
  3. Discuss India as a country: its colours, food, festivals, and how art is integral to its traditions.
  4. Pose questions to engage students, such as:
    • “What colours do you see?”
    • “Have you seen any artwork at a festival?”

Activity (15-20 minutes)

  1. Hand out materials: Provide each student with a sheet of A3 paper and access to coloured chalk or pastels.
  2. Demonstrate creating a Rangoli pattern:
    • Show how to draw simple shapes like circles, dots, and flowers.
    • Emphasize overlapping colours and patterns.
  3. Encourage creativity:
    • Let students work on their patterns freely, encouraging them to use the whole page and mix different colours.
    • Walk around to assist individuals or small groups, fostering enthusiasm and guiding lower-achieving students as needed.
  4. Encourage descriptions: Ask students to name their colours and describe their patterns as they work.

Cleanup and Reflection (3-5 minutes)

  1. Signal for cleanup: Ask students to gather their materials and clean the area.
  2. Reflection: Gather students back together. Allow them to share their artwork with the class, explaining what inspired their designs.
    • Prompt questions such as: “What did you enjoy about making your Rangoli?” or “What colours did you choose and why?”

Assessment

  • Observe students' engagement during the activity.
  • Ensure each student has participated in the creation of their artwork.
  • Listen to their reflections to assess their understanding of the cultural context behind their creations.

Differentiation Strategies

  • For lower-achieving students, provide templates of Rangoli patterns to trace and colour in.
  • Encourage peer support for students who may require additional assistance.

This lesson plan aligns with the ethos of promoting inclusivity and a broader understanding of global cultures through creative practices in art.
