Exploring Our World
Curriculum Area
Geography – Key Stage 1 (Year 2)
National Curriculum Link:
- Locational knowledge: Name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans.
Lesson Objective
By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Identify and name the seven continents and five oceans of the world.
✅ Understand key facts about each continent and ocean through an engaging fact-matching game.
✅ Improve spatial awareness by identifying continents and oceans on a world map.
Lesson Timing (45 Minutes)
1. Starter Activity – “What’s Our World Made Of?” (10 Mins)
🗺️ Engage students with a question: “If we looked at Earth from space, what would we see?”
- Display a large world map or a globe. Ask,
➡️ "What covers most of the Earth – land or water?" (Lead students to realise it’s mostly water).
- Explain the concept of continents and oceans using simple language:
Continents = The biggest pieces of land
Oceans = Huge areas of water
👀 Quick Think-Pair-Share Activity:
- Give each pair of students 10 seconds to look at the world map and guess how many big land areas (continents) they can see.
- Reveal the answer (seven continents) and write them on the board, asking children to repeat them together.
2. Main Teaching – “Meet the Continents & Oceans” (15 Mins)
📍 Step 1 – Introducing the Continents
- Use an interactive power move: Point & Chant!
- Teacher points to a continent on the map and says its name. The class repeats.
- Use actions to aid memory (e.g., act out waves for Oceania, elephants for Africa).
- Share one fun fact for each continent, e.g.:
🌍 Africa – Home to the largest desert in the world (Sahara!).
🌏 Asia – The biggest continent (where Mount Everest is!).
🌎 South America – Has the famous Amazon Rainforest.
🌊 Step 2 – Introducing the Oceans
- Explain that the ocean isn’t just “one big puddle” – it has different names!
- Associate 🐠 animals with each ocean for fun learning:
Pacific – The largest ocean (home to giant whales!)
Atlantic – Closest to the UK (where the Titanic sank!).
3. Group Activity – Fact Matching Game (15 Mins)
💡 How It Works:
- Give students matching cards with continent/ocean names and a fact (on separate pieces of paper).
- In pairs, students must match the facts with the correct ocean or continent.
- As they work, teacher circulates to support and asks guiding questions, e.g.,
➡️ “Which is the biggest ocean?” ➡️ “Which continent do you live in?”
🎉 Speed Challenge Extension:
- If time allows, group pairs into teams and have a “fastest match” competition!
4. Plenary – “World Map Challenge” (5 Mins)
🧩 Using an interactive world map on a display:
- Volunteers come up and point to continents and oceans as names are called.
- Whole-class applause after each correct answer to build confidence!
💭 Exit Question:
- “Tell your partner one cool fact you learnt today about a continent or an ocean!”
Adaptations for Different Learners
📖 For High Achievers:
- Encourage them to find extra facts from books or maps during group work.
- Challenge them to put continents in size order from largest to smallest.
🤝 For Students Who Need More Support:
- Provide a coloured map where continents & oceans are numbered for easy reference.
- Assign them a “continent buddy” to help during matching activities.
Resources Needed
🗺️ Large printed world map/globe
🃏 Fact-matching cards (prepared before lesson)
👩🏫 Interactive whiteboard or projector for visual learning
Teacher Reflection Questions
✅ Were students able to name all seven continents and five oceans confidently?
✅ Did students enjoy the fact-matching activity – was it pitched at the right level?
✅ How successfully did the map-based plenary reinforce key learning?
💡 Next Steps:
In the next lesson, we could explore one continent in detail, learning about its climates, animals, and countries!
🌍 Final Thought for Teachers
This lesson brings curiosity and energy into Geography! The mix of movement, games, and team learning ensures engagement—because learning about the world should feel like an adventure! 🚀
