Overview
This 45-minute, mixed P1 and P2 session engages 17 Foundation Stage pupils in developing spatial awareness, positional language, and directional skills through a hands-on, technology-enhanced maths activity. Using Bee-Bots and a specially designed activity mat featuring maps, shapes, and colours, the lesson supports differentiated learning across three groups aligned with the Northern Ireland Curriculum, with a focus on developing confidence, communication, and early problem-solving.

Group Differentiation
- Group 1 (Lower ability): Focus on simple single-step movements and naming colours/shapes at the Bee-Bot’s location. Support with teacher or assistant guidance.
- Group 2 (Medium ability): Follow sequences of 2-3 Bee-Bot commands and use positional language to describe routes. Encourage peer discussion.
- Group 3 (Higher ability): Plan and program multi-step routes, use more complex positional sentences, and predict Bee-Bot’s movement outcomes.
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction and Warm-up (8 minutes)
- Gather all pupils on the carpet. Show Bee-Bot and explain it as a friendly robot that follows code commands.
- Introduce or recap positional language using a puppet and objects: "The teddy is under the chair," "The book is next to the box," and directional commands ("turn left," "move forward").
- Sing a simple positional language song with actions (e.g., "Left, Right, Forward, Back").
2. Demonstration (5 minutes)
- Gather pupils around one Bee-Bot and the map mat. Demonstrate how to press buttons on Bee-Bot to move it to a coloured square or shape.
- Narrate the movements using positional language: "Bee-Bot moves forward two steps to the red square," "Now it turns right."
3. Group Activity with Bee-Bots (25 minutes)
- Divide the class into three groups. Each group works at a station with a Bee-Bot and their own mat.
- Group 1:
- Teacher/assistant guides pupils to press one directional button to move Bee-Bot to a shape or colour.
- Pupils name the colour or shape when Bee-Bot arrives.
- Group 2:
- Pupils work in pairs. One gives directions using positional language; the other presses buttons on Bee-Bot.
- They move Bee-Bot along a route of two or three steps, and describe the location reached using positional phrases.
- Group 3:
- Pupils plan a route on paper or with verbal prompts.
- They program Bee-Bot with up to 5 commands to reach a target on the map (e.g., "Move to the blue triangle").
- Discuss outcomes and make corrections if needed.
Circulate between groups giving targeted support and prompting use of language.
4. Reflection and Sharing (5 minutes)
- Gather pupils back together. Invite each group to share one favourite route or something they discovered about the Bee-Bots and positional language.
- Reinforce key vocabulary by repeating some positional phrases and directions that came up in their activities.
- Award stickers for effort, teamwork, and use of language.
Assessment
- Formative: Observe pupils’ ability to press correct buttons and describe movements using positional language during group work. Note verbal responses and peer collaboration.
- Peer assessment: Encourage children to praise and gently correct one another’s use of language and instructions during paired tasks.
- Teacher notes: Record pupils’ understanding and confidence with directions to inform future lesson planning.
Extension Ideas
- Create story-based challenges where Bee-Bot “travels” to landmarks on a map for a purpose (e.g., delivering letters).
- Introduce simple coding symbols (arrows) to match buttons on Bee-Bot, linking early literacy, numeracy, and technology.
