Teaching Instructions

I would like the plan to focus on learning about tempo and dynamics through rhythmic exercises and singing. There should be a ks3 suitable retrieval task at the beginning recapping over note values and names. All teaching should be through performing but should also explicitly teach music specific vocabulary.

Exploring Rhythm

Curriculum Area

Subject: Music
Key Stage: 3
Level: Year 7

Lesson Objectives

  1. Understand and apply the concepts of tempo and dynamics.
  2. Perform rhythmic exercises using correct note values.
  3. Recognise and sing with awareness of tempo and dynamics variations.
  4. Develop vocabulary related to tempo and dynamics.

Resources Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Percussion instruments (e.g., tambourines, drums, shakers)
  • Metronome (digital or physical)
  • Audio examples of various tempos and dynamics
  • Sheet music with simple rhythmic notations
  • Space for movement

Lesson Outline

Introduction (20 minutes)

Retrieval Task:

  • Display various note values and names on the board (e.g., semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver).
  • Ask students to work in pairs to recall and discuss the duration of each note.
  • Introduce a quick quiz where students must match note names to their corresponding values. Correct any misconceptions on the spot.

Vocabulary Focus:

  • Introduce the terms "tempo" and "dynamics." Write them on the board and explain:
    • Tempo: the speed at which a piece of music is played.
    • Dynamics: the volume of the music, ranging from soft to loud.

Main Activity: Rhythmic Exercises (35 minutes)

  1. Body Percussion (10 minutes):

    • Divide students into small groups.
    • Demonstrate a simple rhythmic pattern using body percussion (e.g., stamping, clapping, patting thighs).
    • Have groups practice and perform the pattern, experimenting with different tempos (slow, moderate, fast).
    • Discuss how changing the tempo affects the feel of the rhythm.
  2. Instrumental Ensemble (15 minutes):

    • Assign each group a selection of percussion instruments.
    • Provide a basic rhythmic notation and ask them to perform it, first focusing on tempo changes.
    • Introduce dynamic variations (piano, mezzo-piano, forte) and have students apply these to their performance.
  3. Reflection and Sharing (10 minutes):

    • Allow each group to perform their rhythm with tempo and dynamic variations in front of the class.
    • Encourage constructive feedback, focusing on how well they used tempo and dynamics to alter the "mood" of their performance.

Singing Practice (25 minutes)

  1. Warm-Up (5 minutes):

    • Lead the class in vocal warm-up exercises that incorporate dynamic variations, such as singing scales softly and gradually increasing in loudness.
  2. Call and Response Song (15 minutes):

    • Teach a simple call and response song.
    • Emphasise the use of varied tempo and dynamics throughout the song.
    • Encourage students to lead sections of the song, deciding on tempo and dynamic changes.
  3. Group Reflection (5 minutes):

    • Discuss which tempo and dynamic changes were effective and how they affected the song's overall impact.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

  • Recap key vocabulary: tempo and dynamics.
  • Ask students to reflect verbally on their learning: How did changing tempo/dynamics alter the music?
  • Homework assignment: Listen to a piece of music at home and write a short paragraph about how tempo and dynamics are used.

Extension Activity

  • Challenge interested students to create a short rhythmic piece using body percussion that includes intentional tempo and dynamic changes. They can present these in the next lesson.

This lesson plan provides a comprehensive and engaging exploration of tempo and dynamics through practical activities, suitable for Year 7 students based on the UK curriculum standards.
