Find out about the seven continents

Overview

This 40-minute lesson introduces Year 1 students to the seven continents of the world. Using engaging activities aligned with the National Curriculum for Geography (KS1), children will begin to recognise continents as large areas of land and understand their names and positions.

National Curriculum Links

Geography – Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2):

  • Locational knowledge: Name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.
  • Place knowledge: Understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom, and of a contrasting non-European country.
  • Human and physical geography: Identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles.
  • Geographical skills and fieldwork: Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the seven continents and five oceans.

Learning Objective:

  • To name the seven continents and identify their positions on a globe or world map.
  • To develop an awareness of the world’s geographical layout including the terms ‘continent’ and ‘ocean’.
  • To recognise simple features linking continents, such as basic climate zones.

Resources Needed:

  • Large colourful world map or globe (preferably interactive)
  • Seven continent flashcards with pictures and names (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia)
  • Large floor puzzle of the world map separated by continents
  • A world continent song or rhyme (audio or video)
  • Paper and crayons for a quick drawing activity
  • Sticky notes or labels

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Gather children on the carpet and show them a globe or large map.
  • Explain: “Today, we are going to travel around our planet and find out about the big pieces of land called continents.”
  • Briefly introduce the word ‘continent’ as “a very big piece of land, bigger than a country.”
  • Show the seven continent flashcards one by one, pronouncing each name clearly. Ask children to repeat after you.

2. Main Teaching Activity (15 minutes)

Interactive Globe/Map Tour (10 mins):

  • Spin the globe or point to areas on the map. For each continent:
    • Say the name.
    • Share one simple fact (e.g., Antarctica is very cold and has lots of ice; Africa is very sunny and has lots of animals).
    • Show a flashcard with an image of a famous animal, landmark or landscape from that continent.
  • Use an engaging continent song/rhyme and encourage children to sing or clap along.

World Puzzle Activity (5 mins):

  • In small groups, give pieces of the floor puzzle. Ask them to work together to fit their continent puzzle pieces into the correct place on the floor map.
  • Encourage children to name the continent they are placing.

3. Independent or Paired Activity (10 minutes)

Draw Your Favourite Continent:

  • Children choose a continent from the flashcards to draw something special from that place (animal, tree, or landmark).
  • Prompt with questions: “What lives there? Is it hot or cold?”
  • After drawing, children label their picture with the continent name (teacher can scribe if needed).

4. Plenary and Assessment (10 minutes)

  • Gather children back together.
  • Play a quick ‘continent naming game’: Hold up a flashcard and ask, “Who can tell me the name of this continent?” and “What do you remember about it?”
  • Use sticky notes for children to place their drawing on a large wall map or board where the continent belongs.
  • Recap learning with a final sing-along of the continent song.

Assessment of Learning

  • Observe children's participation during the globe/map tour and puzzle activity to see if they can name continents accurately.
  • Listen during the plenary game for correct continent names and related facts.
  • Review drawings and labels to assess recognition and understanding of at least one continent.
  • Informal questioning during activities to gauge understanding of “continent” as a concept.

Differentiation & Inclusion

  • Support: Provide adult support during puzzle and drawing for children who need help with fine motor skills or language.
  • Challenge: Ask more able students to find two interesting facts about a continent or locate at least two continents on the globe independently.
  • Visuals: Use clear, bright images on flashcards and song videos to support children with different learning needs.
  • Language: Repeat key vocabulary often and use gestures to help understanding.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Literacy: Practising listening and speaking skills through chants and group discussions.
  • Art: Drawing and labelling continents develops fine motor skills and creativity.
  • Music: The continent song supports memory retention via rhythm and rhyme.

Teacher Reflection Questions

  • Were all students able to recall and name all seven continents by the end of the lesson?
  • Did the globe and puzzle activities engage reluctant learners?
  • How well did the song aid memory? Would a different style (e.g., rap, dance) work better next time?
  • Could this lesson be extended next time to include countries within each continent or basic climate zones?

This lesson harnesses multi-sensory, interactive approaches to create a memorable introduction to continents for young learners, anchored firmly in the KS1 Geography curriculum.
