Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to focus on an introduction to shades and tones

Exploring Shades and Tones

Curriculum Area

National Curriculum for Art & Design (England) – Key Stage 2

  • Pupils should develop their techniques, including their control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation, and increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft, and design.
  • They should also learn about colour theory, understanding shade, tone, and mixing techniques.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils will:

  1. Understand the difference between shade (adding black) and tone (adding grey).
  2. Experiment with creating different shades and tones using primary and secondary colours.
  3. Apply their learning through a creative painting exercise.

Lesson Structure (60 Minutes)

1. Introduction – What is Shade and Tone? (10 minutes)

  • Start with a quick discussion:
    • What happens when you mix colours?
    • What do "shade" and "tone" mean in art?
  • Display a graded colour chart with a primary colour (e.g., blue), gradually mixed with black (shade) and grey (tone).
  • Ask pupils which side looks darker/moodier and which looks softer/subtle.

2. Demonstration – Mixing Shades and Tones (15 minutes)

  • Show pupils how to create a shade by adding black to a base colour in small amounts.
  • Demonstrate how adding grey instead of black changes the colour subtly rather than darkening it dramatically.
  • Use a visible colour swatch sample on a whiteboard or paper, adding black and grey step by step.
  • Ask pupils for predictions: “What do you think will happen if I add more grey than black?”

3. Practical Activity – Shades & Tones Colour Ladder (20 minutes)

  • Each pupil selects one base colour (red, blue, or green).
  • They create a colour ladder:
    1. Pure base colour at the top.
    2. Below it, mix a slightly darker shade (a tiny amount of black).
    3. Next, mix a more subtle tone (a tiny amount of grey).
    4. Continue this pattern down the ladder, gradually changing the levels of shade and tone.
  • Provide pre-drawn ladders on paper for structure.

4. Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes)

  • Pupils compare their ladders with a partner:
    • Which colours changed the most?
    • Which felt easier/harder to control?
  • Whole-class review: Hang pupils’ work on the board and discuss differences in shading and toning decisions.
  • Ask: Where might we see shades and tones in real life? (Shadows, dusk lighting, painted walls, artwork, etc.).

Resources Needed

✅ A3 paper with pre-drawn colour ladders
✅ Paintbrushes and water pots
✅ Acrylic or watercolour paints
✅ Black and grey paints for mixing
✅ Example shade/tone charts

Differentiation & Support

  • For struggling pupils: Provide pre-mixed examples so they can focus on observation before attempting their own.
  • For confident pupils: Challenge them to create a small painting using only shades and tones instead of direct colours.

Assessment & Next Steps

📌 Informal assessment through observations and questioning.
📌 Students self-assess by placing a star next to their favourite blend on their colour ladder.
📌 Next Lesson: Exploring tints (adding white) and how they contrast with shades and tones.

Wow Factor: Interactive discussion, personal choice in colours, and a visually engaging ladder exercise make this lesson memorable and engaging for young learners.

This lesson introduces foundational colour manipulation skills in an exciting, structured way, developing students’ observational and mixing techniques while fostering creativity. It aligns directly with the UK curriculum through experimentation and colour awareness.
